iPhone 5s will not give an audible alert for text messages

iPhone 5s will not give an audible alert for text messages. Do not disturb is off. Tried hard reboot.

Silly question but under settings > notifications > messages do you have a sound set there?

My custom ringtones just suddenly self destructed...

I have a sound selected, but when I select any of the sound options I do not get a test sound. Volume is set to max. The phone will ring for class & play music, do I know the speakers work.

Mute switch on the side of the phone?

Mute is off. The sounds are now working again this morning. Even though I did not reboot or turn the phone off. It has done this before and then quit again.
