iPhone 5s won't stay in DFU mode long enough

I'm trying to install new firmware into my iPhone 5s, but it won't stay in DFU mode long enough for the firmware to install.

I'm trying to completley memory wipe the phone by putting in iOS 10.1.1. While it is installing, the phone just exits out of DFU mode and goes back to the setup screen.

If it's 10.1.1, which is basically the latest, can you just use recovery mode?

I got it to install the new firmware, only yo find out it was an iCloud-locked paperweight.
