Apps not updating can be settings or account related. I'd go through and sign out and back into your account to see if it prompts an error. Can you download any other apps? As for the other problem, sounds like a apple driver error. I'd try hard resetting it first by holding power and home button. After it comes back up, see if iTunes recognizes it. You may want to verify that you have the most current iTunes version on your PC also.... If it still won't show up, then there are other steps to try.
