Highly unlikely to scratch but still possible. As someone mentioned above, most luxury watches have sapphire crystals and while very scratch resistant, they can scratch. But it's very unlikely the camera lenses should get scratch under normal circumstances.

Thought I'd help everyone out as I had this same worry. I decided to test it out on a working display iPhone at a local store. I used the tip of a paper clip. It scratches. Use a case of keep it away from sharp objects!

Only if that paper clip was made of Diamond or Sapphire. A paper clip cannot scratch sapphire.

With the camera lens protruding out on the new iPhone 6, will it get scratched up when laying the phone down on its back?

The ring around the lens can crack or scratch, but unless you drop the phone and the lens lands on something such as a diamond, the lens won't scratch. As mentioned above, there's technically the possibility that it could shatter, albeit unlikely given its size.

Mohs Scale of Mineral Hardness

From CNET:
Sapphire is hard. On the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, the material clocks in at a 9 out of 10, while Gorilla Glass registers only a 6 or 7. The dense, crystalline material is so hard that few things in the world can actually scratch it, so it must be cut and polished using diamond, a 10 on the Mohs scale and the hardest mineral on earth.

I don't know why everyone is saying that it's unscratchable and uncrackable...

I don't know about scratches but I've had my phone since the day it came out and I dropped it once causing a crack in the camera lens.

I now have to get it replaced after having the phone for about 5 days.

1) it protruding doesn't affect anything. Other phones have had protruding cameras for a while now

2) glass is very hard to scratch

3) scratches won't affect pictures

There are other common materials that are harder than sapphire that can scratch sapphire. Sand actually often contains material that can scratch sapphire, and some modern building materials as well. Not just diamond.

Yeap, even some materials contained in gravel. And to add to that (but it mostly concerns women) a nail file can EASILY scratch sapphire. diamond rings were mentioned.

But yeah, sapphire watches can me worn for 10-20 years and not have scratches, not one. There might be micro scratches, but you won't be able to see them anyway.

Put it this way: if you're not going to scratch it on purpose (crazy, but hey, apparently people are now bending their phones on purpose, so who knows) most likely it will never scratch.

I'd like to know who these people are that manage to scratch the sapphire face on theirs watches. With all the talk of sapphire lately, I keep seeing people make this comparison and make it sound like it's a common occurrence (not really calling you out specifically). I've owned my Citizen watch with a sapphire face for quite a while now and it's still flawless. I can't say the same for my older watches that aren't sapphire. They all have pretty good nicks and scratches on them.

I definitely wouldn't worry about it with these phones. Whether the camera is flush or protruding it's still going to drag around on surfaces. No reason to believe they are more prone to scratches than the iPhone 5. Even with my old 4S I I never saw any scratches on the lens.

I doubt it... Put it a case like your supposed to and you won't have to worry about it. I don't understand you people not wanting to put your phone in a case to keep it from getting scratched up and keep the resale value high. A case will keep the camera from rubbing against the countertop or flat surface of your choosing. Besides the new iPhone is too slippery to go naked anyway.

To sum up, sapphire can be cracked and scratched. But on the Mohs hardness scale (based on what scratches what), it is a 9 and max is 10. Only material harder to scratch than it is diamond.

Sapphire has average shatter resistance, so cracks are more likely than scratches. That said, because it's so small, it is extremely hard (impossible in daily use) to damage. Unless you are rubbing diamonds on it (engagement or wedding rings), you won't have any issues.

There are substances harder then corundum and softer then diamond.

No because it has a sapphire glass. Sapphire does scratch or crack

My iPhone 6 plus lens cover which covers the lens has gotten broke somehow? Unknown to me how Apple can't replace lens cover its attached to back of case. 329 was the quote to replace entire phone even thou the camera works fine for now(dust will get in thou) soon# still works what's up with that??It is not made for use without case at all. I was sadly waiting for otterbox preserve but hasn't come out yet. No easy fix tape blurs photos I think this is very bad and sad ,maybe iPhone should state needs case immediately will break without warning since camera protrudes. I know it needs a case but this is terrible part of its design buyer beware!!!

But it's not the sapphire that's hitting the table when it's flat on the table, it's the metal ring. I tend to slide the phone on a clean table, or even just rotate it. I'm wondering if I'll end up with a dull end of the metal ring at the contact point.

My iphone 5 has 2 scratches across the camera lens on the back. Maybe my pants pockets came with diamond dust weaved in?

Personally I would not even think about carrying the 6 caseless if I planned to ever put it on a table.

I know that. Apple made a point out of it. Just strange they didn't make a point out of it this time, but no biggy.

Probably Apple wasn't feeling so great about sapphire in general after the debacle. Better to just let it slide this year.

But I've never had this problem with previous phones and not my previous iPhone's either very unlightening it's not to do with protruding metal ring it has to do with the lens cover that covers actual lense sapphire might not be what it is made of so if it breaks 329 is cost and if not fixed dust will get in and actual clarity will be greatly impacted get a case or maybe just maybe it should of came with one since the design warrants one

No I meant the cover is still sapphire, they just don't feel like talking about sapphire right now.

My lens cracked!

I had a SPIGEN ultra thin cover on my phone and its a well taken care off phone with no scratches or problems. Yet the camera lens at some point seems to have cracked purely because it was protruding :(

My 5S never had this problem as it's lens was within the flat back of the phone. Am quite annoyed with this as I spent a fair bit for my 128GB iPhone 6.

Apple say it will cost $335 to replace the camera as they wont just replace the sapphire front. I have said that this is unacceptable and am trying to work with them to find another solution. Lets see how it goes...

I can't seem to find exactly how far out the camera lens protrudes. Does anyone have an idea? .6mm? 1mm?

i read somewhere here that its .4mm
My case is .25mm and the camera still protrudes (very slightly)

Again, its sourced from this forum so take it for what its worth

Its glass, it isnt a design flaw, you were just not careful with your device for you to break your camera lens, its a very small circle and you need direct impact on it to shatter it, it is sapphire glass, it is extremely resistant to glass but not shattering, what do you expect? Considering the camera lens is so tiny, it is quite difficult to break and shatter the small camera lens(never happened to me on a smartphone ever )
