I get that 3rd party app developers need to update their apps to take advantage of the new screen size and modes that the 6+ offers. However, there's one thing that throws me off all of the time: The lock screen only has a portrait orientation. My iPad will change the lock screen depending on which way I'm holding it just like the 6+ does when it's unlocked(on the springboard). I wish they would change the orientation of the lock screen to be horizontal when I'm holding it that way. C'mon iOS 8.2...

Because iPads have square (1024 x 1024 pixels, for non retina models) dimensions. iPhones do not.

The iPhone 6 Plus does too - the virtual size of the homescreen is 2208 x 2208 px, as it can be rotated.

I agree - it would be nice to have a landscape lockscreen like the iPad.

How do iPads have square dimensions?

I'm sleep deprived.

The screens do not have square dimensions, but they use square dimensions for wallpapers.

All stock iPad wallpapers (non retina) are 1024 x 1024, to allow rotation.
