You shouldn't be reading books on an iPad. You will screw your vision. I only read long forms on iPad (that takes 10-15 minutes), nothing more.

Reading on the iPad Mini Retina for me is nice and sharp. No eye fatigue issues. Should be about the same as the Kindle Fire HDX, right?

I think I need a kindle for dedicated reading. I hate getting notifications that interrupt my reading lol.

I voted 5S and iPad because the 5S is still a very current phone and the iPhone 6+ is not an iPad mini replacement for me.

one minute you're reading the newspaper and suddenly your wife/SO calls lol

From a minimalist standpoint, the fewer devices, the better

devils advocate, when you lose/break iphone you lose multiple devices. In the DSLR world its their reason for having smaller multiple memory cards. 1TB flash FTW lol.

Any backlit illuminated screen is bad for your eyes. It's like watching a lightbulb. I know it seems ok and comfortable and all, but when you'll be in your forties and fifties it will start showing up. There's a reason why ebook readers have that edge lit illumination so you never see the source of light.

But I can't follow my fantasy football team and plan Clash of Clans on a Kindle Paperwhite! :)

Nope. And that's one of the central reasons it's the superior device for reading.

Seriously, though, if long reading sessions are a priority for you you really should consider a Paperwhite. It's totally worth it. I use my Paperwhite more than any other device I own. And I own an iPhone 6 Plus, an iPad Air, a MacBook Air and a Mac Pro, all of which get plenty of use themselves.

Well, I picked up a 64GB iPhone 6+ tonight from the Apple Store. Wow it seems huge (so far)! Instead of a large phone, I'd almost call it a "Mini" iPad Mini. Restoring to it now...

6+ over the 5s. But the iPad can be something you use whether or not you have the 6+ or not, there's still a valid case for it because browsing on a wider screen device is so much better than not having it.

Agreed. It is still worth it to keep the iPad if you can afford it for the iPad specific apps. For example, FTL (the only game I play on my iPad actually) is only an iPad app. It is not available for the iPhone.

P.S.
I like your signature.

I have an iPad, a 6 Plus, and a Paperwhite. Between the iPad and the Paperwhite, I prefer the Paperwhite. I don't need to go into why eink is better for sustained reading. But between the Paperwhite and the 6 Plus, I use the 6 Plus way more. Why? Because it's always with me. And I know it's already charged. I know I can sync the books anytime, and download new ones without worrying about being connected to wifi (or dealing with the super slow connections trying to navigate a store or menus on an eink screen). The text looks fantastic on the 6 Plus screen, and I don't have to scrunch it up to my face to make it readable. The 6 Plus has me reading more again, because I can pull it out anytime I have a free moment and read a few paragraphs or a chapter out of a book. It's great for that.

If you're reading ebooks at home, I highly recommend a dedicated eink e-reader, but if you read them mainly on the go, the 6 Plus is the perfect device for it.

As for an iPad and phone vs just the phone, it depends on your usage. I have an iPad Air and I'm not giving it up even though I have the Plus because the size difference is significant and it's perfect for reading comic books. I read a ton of comics, and the Air is close to the original print size, so I can read them with little compromise. I can't do that on any other device that runs iOS currently.

Totally agree. There really is no substitute IMO for e-ink compared to a LCD display. It's a total night and day difference.

Just accidentally broke my 2014 Kindle Paperwhite, and I have been reading on my iPod Touch. It just isn't the same at all. I did just pre-order a Paperwhite Voyager or whatever they are called now.

Absolutely accurate and I speak from experience. Always had better than normal vision, could see things very accurately from far away that all my friends could not see. After years of staring for hours at various backlit computer screens without feeling any effects or so I thought, my eyes are all jacked up now. And indeed it became noticeable in my 40's....I have glasses now to see things far away and it really is a nuisance to me after enjoying better than perfect vision for so long...there is no doubt my vision is screwed up from the computer use and not just from age....glasses, what a pain in the ass, still not used to them. If I had it to do over again, I would have given my eyes a rest from looking at the computer screen every 20 minutes or so and focused on something far away, but instead I spent hours without a break staring at the screen. :(

Shrug ... I set the color scheme to night mode and read with white text on a black background. It doesn't tire my eyes out in the least.

Used the iPhone 6+ now for just over a day. Very nice device! Haven't used the iPad Mini during that period and have gotten by, though I do like the iPad for a number of things instead. 6+ is definitely not as easy though to carry around and place into the jeans pocket. We'll see for at least a few days.

I prefer the 5s and mini retina combo. Wife prefers the 6+ though.

I'm a one hander on the iPhone and found the 6 annoying to operate in one hand. I like the design of the 6 and hope they release a 6s in 4".

Since I have received the plus, I have not touched my iPad mini or any of the larger versions I own. Still love the iPad, but given a choice I would chose the plus. It's more portable and although it has a smaller screen, I haven't felt as if I am sacrificing anything by using the plus over the iPad.

I definitely can't text 1-handed with the 6 Plus. With the 6 I kind of can, but definitely easiest on the 5s. I have a feeling that in the end I'll have an iPad mini retina along with a 5s or a 6 but not the 6 Plus. We'll see.

iPhone 6 Plus, but that's just me. I can see many instances in which it'd be preferable to have a separate phone and mini tablet. But personally, the 5S is too old (I keep my phones for at least two years), and for what I want from a small tablet, the 6 Plus is large enough for those tasks.

All three of these devices exist for a reason, because each individual user has their own specific needs. And only you can decide which combination is right for you.
