My daughter's phone has something similar to the known touch screen problem, but it doesn't get a grey bar across the top. Sometimes the screen works, sometimes it doesn't. I've had the screen replaced a few times, too.

Any ideas what this could be?
 
It still could be related to those chips, as replacing the screen didn't solve the problem. Just a thought, I'm not saying I know for sure though.
 
Yes, that is the Touch Disease.

There are two Touch ICs (cumulus chip and meson chip).

Cumulus chip fails = flickering

Mason chip fails = no flickering
