iPhone 6, ships or delivers the 19?

I've been under the impression that if you preorder, the phone will be delivered the 19th, as done in years past. Well, I just read an article on flipboard (via slash gear) that it ships the 19 instead of being delivered then. Does anyone have some more info on this?

Also, does anyone have prior experience preordering using a family plan upgrade and picking up in store? If I select the I. Store option, I don't want them to come out with my phone turned on and registered to the other number.
