I think that Apple speakers on iPhone 6 provide high volume after 80-90%.... below that, the volume seems low... did anyone notice that?

If you move the volume slider on the touch screen you can get finer-grained control of the volume.

The coarseness of the volume buttons sometimes annoys me too. 🙁 I wish it could be adjusted.

True that. Its a huge disappointment for me that Im selling it for that reason only.
