Well, they were literally forced into it. Can you imagine the tech media and consumer response if they attempted to release another 4" phone. They'd be taken (and laughed) to bits. Funny thing is that this applies to the 4 inch, but the reported 5.5 inch, that I feel was just a choice. I get having to compete with the likes of the Note 4 purely for commercial reasons but that really is the kludge bit, completely unnecessary. Although maybe they'll target it towards designers, artists, and professionals like architects. Screen real estate to display images, create, or use high end software like CAD.

There's nothing stopping Apple launching three sizes with modern hardware.

I can guarantee you that the way you hold your phone one handed is not a firm grip like can be done with 4" and less....unless you're 6'5".

I'm not sure what your point is. I never said anything about what my grip was or how firm it was. I stated pretty clearly that I can hold my phone and use it one handed easily.

You know what I can guarantee - that my hand can firmly hold a marble but that I can't get that same grip on an elephant

This is fun watching all of your concerns about the size. I even saw other forums where people where suggesting that they wouldn't buy Apple at all if the phones get above 4.7". WHAT? I dumped the iPhone a long time ago and went to a Note. My wife who is small moved from her iPhone 4 to the 6" Nokia 1520 and never.looked back...she is on 5'1". If you haven't used a large phone you need to because I doubt you too would go small again. I personally will probably move back to an iPhone if the 5.5" is true. I

I wonder how this will be implemented. I've used bigger phones for the past 2.5 years (note and galaxy S series) and I've never used the one handed mode. I don't see the point of shrinking the screen. Why buy a large display if you are going to shrink it.

Indeed. I would say it goes back further. People claiming they would be buried with their 3.5" phone :)

Yes, because this totally makes big screen useless

Not always, only most of the time.

Let me guess:
Your wife has longe fingernails and carries the phone in a handbag? Makes sense to have a phone with huge keys then. But not for someone who wants to carry it in reasonably sized pants.

IF you can reach the keys…

Well, some of us have rather long fingers so that's not been an issue. Granted, my phone has a 4.7" screen but I have no problems holding and using much larger phones (but again, that's just because of hand size). I know a lot of people who struggle with larger phones.

This is why i would never consider the 4.7 iphone. Too small.

Iphone 5’5 is the only thing that would ever make me leave the note line and i struggle to see it having the features that the note has for my needs. That and I love the S pen option.

that said really hoping the 5'5 is a good one.

This might explain 'Resizable iPhone' that appeared in xcode.

Then again, that could be for split screen multitasking. Or both!

As someone who reads books on the iPad mini, I'd like to see iBooks in iOS more intelligently designed for scrolling vertically.

I like having the option as an alternative to page turning (a kind of awkward UI metaphor for the real thing), but dislike having to use both hands -- one to hold, one to scroll.

Some tilting option using the gravity sensor might work, especially if it were customizable to angle, speed and lines-to-advance.

I hope it's not the Samsung implementation where the entire UI is shrunk down to cover 3/4 screen. Looks silly.

Maybe Apple will come up with a way to make your thumb larger digitally and the phone will work with holographic thumb gestures. :D:D:D

I really hope that one-handed mode can do more than just shrinking the screen, only companies like Samsung will do something like that!

One-handed mode should offer some UI guidelines for developers to follow. Something like Diagonal UI will be good. (https://www.behance.net/gallery/vice-versa-diagonal-ui-optimized-for-a-single-hand-ix/12419409)

I hope they can make use of the touchscreen to detect when a user is trying to tap something out of their reach.
e.g. you are using your phone on your right hand and you want to press the top left app. iOS shrinks the whole screen down to the bottom right side of the screen and after you tap on the app, it resizes back to fullscreen. iOS will know whether you are using the phone with your left or right hand. So, instead of you stretching your thumb, the screen goes to you.

Just my 2 cents worth of suggestions!:apple:

I never use one handed mode on the Note 3, except for the first time I checked it out. I can still type one handed and navigate around without much hassle. For the few times I need to stretch diagonally across, I just use my other hand. What some fail to realize is that, this is not intended to be a one handed device and you know what, that's okay.

Don't let the Apple gravy train fool you into thinking one handed operation is the end all be all. It's very possible to have a pleasant experience with a bigger device.

I would never suggest that features need not be included. To each their own. However - this mode is silly to me. My phone now is 5" and I can use it easily with one hand. 5.5 - maybe... but even so - I find the option not important to me.

Its almost like some people have small hands ;p

Amen! I'll never go back to a phone under 5.5. I personally think it's the perfect size for someone who uses it for all needs. I don't use my mac or hp laptop because I can enjoy all those things on my Note 2 but on the go :)

You know that you are basically describing how this actually works on the Samsung phones?

You activate and de-activate the 'shrunken screen mode' by a quick left-right-left swipe on the edge of the screen. This mode can be switched on and off in half a second.

Of course you don't have to go into a menu to enable it when you need it - that would be laughable. This is a mode that can be activated instantly when you need it for some reason, and not a setting that you would use the phone in all the time.

Are you a dude with big hands?

Probably not. Most normal people can use the Note one handed.

One thing is for sure; it's not gonna work like this:

It's not, even in the Samsung sphere that's just one option out of many.

Never mind, kdarling beat me to it.

That's just one of the options. And you only do it when you want to tap a button at a far corner, then the display can go back full size again.

As for looking silly, don't even get me started on Apple's implementation of iPhone apps on the iPad via pixel doubling.

Meh. Personally I've never had a need. These things are not as big as you think, and calls and most other common little things are still easy to do.

And if you do get a really big screen, then you're likely to be someone who mostly uses these two handed anyway.

Agreed and seconded!

Seems obvious

I am amazed that people will argue that this is happening, seems like an obvious implementation.

Guys don't forget that 4.7" is diagonal.

The actual difference in width of 4 vs 4.7 is only about 0.33 inches more. Hardly an enormous difference.

I'm not sure if anyone that opts for the 5.5 is concerned with one handed use...

Some people

If using a phone with a large screen isn't a problem for you that doesn't mean it isn't a problem for other people. Some people need to get over themselves. Even if the 4.7 inch model will be only a 0.33 inch width difference that would put it out of reach for people that already have trouble stretching across the 4 inch screen. Having a one handed mode option (keyword is option) makes sense, since this would work towards satisfying concerns over using a larger screen phone. If you don't like the inclusion of a one handed mode, don't use it, simple as that. If you don't like a phone with a bigger screen, don't buy it, simple as that. If you have small hands and like big screen phones, then you are in luck.
