I did it for the iPhone 4. While I had a great time, I wouldn't ever do it again.

I did it for the iPhone 5. First time I've ever stayed up all night and it was a very good time. For the 6, I really don't care if I get it the first day. Maybe that's because I had my first iPhone 5 for a few weeks then returned it to get the 32GB version. That reset my upgrade date so I'm not due until October 18th. I'll probably be getting a new phone that day or a few days later. It will give me a chance to compare the two sizes and see what the reviews are.

You don't lose your Unlimited plan by doing AT&T's NEXT program. I did it through Apple yesterday as a test and the system kept my unlimited plan on all the way through.

Really?? That's awesome to know. I still prefer my ridiculous retention plan and features that I don't want to lose, though. ;-)

Did you have to change to a different calling plan???

You keep your calling plan as well. I have an old 300min. Roll over plan with unlimited M2M and 500 N&W calling plan and went through Apple as a test of NEXT to see whether I would lose anything or not. The system kept everything but my $10/month Unlimited texting plan. I'm not worried about that though as I know AT&T will change it back for me if this happens again when I do order the iPhone 6.

Here is a screenshot showing that my old voice and unlimited data plan stayed the same when I got to the point of checkout online.

I preordered my iPhone 5 9 hours after preorders opened. My phone arrived 1 day after the first phones started arriving on people's doors. No camping for me.

Thanks, Eileen! I was under the apparently erroneous impression that moving to AT&T Next would cause me a bunch of hassle. I actually prefer the 2-yr. contract system, but that's great news if I can do the same with Next.

I may have to go with Next because my last 2-yr. contract won't reach halfway through until early October, because even though I had ordered my 5s within the first 10 minutes of it becoming available online, it didn't ship until weeks later. Big First World problem, I know. haha...

Does the rate get discounted like the current metered Next account data bundles or is the only "advantage" that you can upgrade every year if you want?

I just checked out the Next program. Few questions -

Is the phone at full price or discounted like it would be if purchased with a two year contract?

They say the phone has to be in working condition and unlocked. Can it show normal signs of wear?

And finally, I like to keep my phones. Sometimes they need to be replaced after two years like the screen has an issue or, like with my current phone, ear speaker isn't working and the other doesn't work once in awhile. I'm thinking this plan might not be for me.

Usually $199. or $299. isn't much to purchase the phone. That $199. over 18 months is $11.00 per month. $8.29 per month over 24 then it's owned.

I started my contract in May of 2012.
I was due for an update in May of 2013...but I decided not to take it.
I was due for a contract renewal in May of 2014....but I decided to just stay off contract.

Now I'm waiting for the iPhone 6.....I've been waiting for 2 years, I'm sure you can wait 2 days.

After all, it's the same phone wether you get it the 19th or the 22nd.

This is a #firstworldproblems moment.

It's financing of the full price and you are getting a discount for it on your monthly service. With a contract you pay the subsidy upfront and then higher monthly fees so after 2 years you can end up paying more for the phone than it's actually worth and than you would pay with Next or by buying it outright for full price.

Its all a marketing trick.
You don't believe you are really getting a discount on your service by them financing for free your device for 2 years right?
With the subsidy the phone is yours and you don't have to turn it in to get a newer version. You can sell it for a lot more than what the carrier will give you credit for obviously. Also with FAN discounts that still apply to older plans you get a nice discount on your monthly bill and still a full subsidy;)

To be fair, was this article written before AT&T cut their plan prices?

Its pretty basic math. If you are already on a newer plan with 10 GB or more it's easy to figure out that after 2 years with a subsidized phone that you initially paid more than like $99 to get you'll end up spending more than what you would with Next (or buying it right away). Of course there are cases when one makes more sense then another, but for those on newer plans already Next is simply buying the phone outright but paying it off monthly. If you trade in at some point it might not be worth it, but if you plan to pay it off and own it (whether in the full 20 or 24 months or earlier by just paying off the balance) then then phone is yours for it's normal full price and you can sell it or do whatever you want (and still have the monthly line discount).

Interesting.
If you are on newer mobile share plans and those in their nature are a bad deal to begin with.
But IMO the only real upgrade noncarrier model that makes financial sense is T Mobile's jump.
These other copied programs by verizon or AT&T don't really save you any money but make money for the carrier instead while letting them off the hook for paying for your subsidy. But believe its a great deal if you want.

How is being on a 10 GB plan with 4 phones and unlimited messaging and texting for $160 (essentially $40/month per line) a bad deal again? For quite a few people it's one of the better deals they have ever had with their carrier. As I said before, it's certainly not something for everyone in all cases, but the math does work out for quite a few people, and numbers are numbers.

Jeez guys, chill out. I'm not worrying about waiting two days, I'm worried about waiting weeks if the one I intend to buy gets sold out on launch day. I recall from previous iPhone releases the back orders that occur for folks that did not buy the one they wanted on launch day. Nevermind...

Weeks ? Worried ? Do something else, spend time with friends, go outside, get a real life....;)

Not sure why this is a bad deal at all. Saving about $1000 a year.

So if I'm reading this correct, the plan prices are higher if you buy a subsidized phone. If you go with their Next program, your buying the phone at full price and financing that over "x" number of months with no interest. The plan prices are cheaper if you go this route.

I'm going to research this a little more. I like to get a new phone every two years. With that schedule I get the one that has the biggest upgrade (iPhone 5, 6 ect...). So the longest I'd have the phone is 24 months and I usually like to keep the old one when I replace it. That might change in two years.

Not sure what you mean as I am on a single line account with a 24% FAN discount off my data and voice plan. The discount doesn't show up on that screenshot but they do when I look in OLAM. Other than individual discounts that customers already have on their lines I don't think AT&T applies any extra discounts on single lines for NEXT.

I don't get how T-Mobiles JUMP program is any different than the other carriers when you are still paying full retail for your device when all is said and done. Also, a smaller carrier like T-Mobile has to offer a higher discount on their plans if they have any hope in staying competitive against larger carriers such as Verizon and AT&T whose coverage is a lot wider spread than theirs.

How about unlimited texts, 700 minutes with over 4K rollover minutes and unlimited mobile to mobile calls, 3 iPhones all with unlimited data and one flip phone with no data. And all 4 devices with subsidies every 18-20 months for $170 per month;) No next payments or anything like that either.

What kind of discount do you have on your plan?

This must be a company plan as AT&T did away with 18-20 month subsidy upgrades awhile ago.

Sure, that's a good deal. Like I said in my statement it's not for everyone. What you have is something that most people cant have these days, so they can only go by what is currently offered, so with what is currently being offered many that can't have these older plans can have Next be a good deal for them. Again what I'm saying is that for many on the current plan something like Next is not a rip off at all and can be the better deal. For some on other plans it might not be as worthwhile, sure, but it doesn't make Next a rip off for everyone or even most (given that your type of situation is fairly uncommon these days in the overall sense), that's the point.

Well no NEXT plan for me. I've been w/AT&T for 6 years and have no plans to move to different carrier. Second, I plan on keeping the IP6 beyond the 2 years for the contract. 2 years ago I walked in the local AT&T corporate store, pre-ordered 2 IP5's the day after Apple announced, and I got the phones 2 days after launch. This time around I'm gonna do the same thing, except I'll trade-in both phones and apply it to the new phones. If 9/19 (Friday) is launch Monday the 22nd is just fine.

Not that Next is needed or anything, but seems like Next can be used for that type of setup just fine.
