Honestly, I think they could end up calling it whatever they want, including iPhone 5. As much as I want to say that we have Apple's pattern figured out (the "S cycle" and redesign every other year, etc), I just don't think they're predictable enough.

Wouldn't be surprised if they started going Roman numerals on us. iPhone X with iOSX, yeah? Plus iPhone VII looks cooler than iPhone 7 (though arguably).

I also wouldn't be surprised if we started seeing things like iPhone HD or iPhone LTE or iPhone 4D or simply iPhone.

I don't know one way or another but it seems to me this numbering scheme needs to be disrupted. There will be an iPhone 11, but it would be stupid to call it that.

Macs don't have this kind of numbering, so before too long I would expect future iPhones to simply be called "iPhone" and distinguished by release year.

Your idea is a fine one. After all the laptops are not numbered. Instead they are simply MacBook Pro or MacBook Air.

I really like the idea of the phone being renamed just plain old iPhone. Especially since they may not make any styling changes for awhile. The tiny 3.5" continues to be a big hit with the public and the small size of the phone is much better for the ladies and kids.

It's win/win, just look at the sales volume. There is no need to change it now, or even in the future builds until sales begin to slow a bit.

Just think of the extra profit Apple will make by not changing it.

Brilliant :)

I thought that's what they were going to do when the iPhone 4 was coming out. One of the biggest issues with the naming scheme they have now is taht the names are too similar. Try googling to find how many iPhone 4s have been sold, I guarantee most of the results will be about the 4S. Same with the 3G and 3GS.

The fourth phone? Ummm.. no.
iPhone
iPhone 3G
iPhone 3GS
iPhone 4
iPhone 4S
iPhone 5? Might name it something else.
iPhone 5S? Possibly. Who knows.

Get it?

Why would they call the sixth generation iPhone, the "iPhone 5" when at that time it could be running iOS 6

The reason they named it "iPhone 4" was because it was the 4th gen iPhone. There is no reason why the sixth gen iPhone would be called "iPhone 5"

I bet apple will eventually drop the numbers and it will just be iPhone.
I think this would be very Apple-Like, but because of differences in supported software on iPhones, which are greater than differences between say MacBook Pros, I think they'll still need more specific designations than simply "iPhone".

Following the pattern we have so far, this is what I see.

1st iPhone: iPhone
2nd iPhone: iPhone 3G
3rd iPhone: iPhone 3GS
4th iPhone: iPhone 4
5th iPhone: iPhone 4S
6th iPhone: iPhone 6
7th iPhone: iPhone 6S
8th iPhone: iPhone 8
9th iPhone: iPhone 8s
10th iPhone: iPhone X

iPhone Ultra
iPhone XS
iPhone AI
iPhone 3000
iPhone Pro
iPhone Air
iPhone SE
iPhone GT
iPhone The Next Generation
iPhone DS9
iPhone SG1

lol ok so why did they call it the "iPhone 3G" when it ran iPhone OS 2
or "iPhone 4S" running iOS 5

iPhone 3G was called iPhone 3G because they deemed the "3G" to be more important.

iPhone 4S is probably called iPhone 4S because it looks like the iPhone 4.

They're not going to skip a number... that doesn't make any sense.

It will be iPhone 5, or they'll simply drop the numbers all together.

A lot of people said the exact same thing about the iPhone 4S. A5 chip + iOS 5 + 5th iPhone meant (in their minds) it had to be the iPhone 5.

Then Apple went and called it the iPhone 4S.

So as much as your logic makes sense, it's obviously not the logic Apple is going by.

IMO, the next iPhone will be either the iPhone 4G (assuming it uses LTE technology), or the iPhone 5.

Why iPhone 5?

Because 5 comes after 4. And a regular, average consumer would expect that after iPhone 4/4S comes iPhone 5. If Apple called it iPhone 6, average consumers would wonder what happened to iPhone 5.

Stop thinking from the perspective of a technology enthusiast, and start thinking from the perspective of a regular consumer. That's who Apple is targeting, not you or I.

Yay for common-sense. Apple is not targeting the tech-nerds in this thread, they're targetting average consumers. I don't know why some people can't comprehend this.

Not that I think the iPhone will be called a 5. There is no reason to name it iPhone 6. They name the phones based on marketing, not what generation the phone is because nobody currs about that.

7th generation phone has to be called iPhone 7, right???!!!1

LOL NO.

As long as Apple keeps selling multiple generations of iPhone at the same time (3GS, 4, and 4S are all on sale new right now), there is no way they can just go back to plain iPhone. "Hi, sir, would you like the iPhone 4S or the iPhone?"
