I don't know one way or another but it seems to me this numbering scheme needs to be disrupted. There will be an iPhone 11, but it would be stupid to call it that.
Macs don't have this kind of numbering, so before too long I would expect future iPhones to simply be called "iPhone" and distinguished by release year.

The fourth phone? Ummm.. no.
iPhone
iPhone 3G
iPhone 3GS
iPhone 4
iPhone 4S
iPhone 5? Might name it something else.
iPhone 5S? Possibly. Who knows.
Get it?
It's called logic with a dash of counting. How does that even make sense?
I think this would be very Apple-Like, but because of differences in supported software on iPhones, which are greater than differences between say MacBook Pros, I think they'll still need more specific designations than simply "iPhone".I bet apple will eventually drop the numbers and it will just be iPhone.
Why would they call the sixth generation iPhone, the "iPhone 5" when at that time it could be running iOS 6
The reason they named it "iPhone 4" was because it was the 4th gen iPhone. There is no reason why the sixth gen iPhone would be called "iPhone 5"
lol ok so why did they call it the "iPhone 3G" when it ran iPhone OS 2
or "iPhone 4S" running iOS 5
iPhone 3G was called iPhone 3G because they deemed the "3G" to be more important.
iPhone 4S is probably called iPhone 4S because it looks like the iPhone 4.
They're not going to skip a number... that doesn't make any sense.
It will be iPhone 5, or they'll simply drop the numbers all together.

A lot of people said the exact same thing about the iPhone 4S. A5 chip + iOS 5 + 5th iPhone meant (in their minds) it had to be the iPhone 5.
Then Apple went and called it the iPhone 4S.
So as much as your logic makes sense, it's obviously not the logic Apple is going by.
IMO, the next iPhone will be either the iPhone 4G (assuming it uses LTE technology), or the iPhone 5.
Why iPhone 5?
Because 5 comes after 4. And a regular, average consumer would expect that after iPhone 4/4S comes iPhone 5. If Apple called it iPhone 6, average consumers would wonder what happened to iPhone 5.
Stop thinking from the perspective of a technology enthusiast, and start thinking from the perspective of a regular consumer. That's who Apple is targeting, not you or I.
