Hi,

I have a problem with my new iphone 6S. 9 of 10 times the phone is locked, the COMPASS CALIBRATION kicks in. I open the COMPASS app and is calibrated. Talked to apple, RESTORED the phone as new but nothing. They tested it remotely and they think is not a hardware issue but software. I'm tend to agree.

Anyone else seeing this?

Regards
Hernán.

iPhone 6S. iOS 9.01

Yes. I was trying to track down a battery drain issue and did notice that compass calibration was constantly going. Switched it off for now.

It doesn't do this in mine.
iPhone 6S. iOS 9.0.1. Location for compass app is set to while using app.
do you have any magnetic cases to attach to car dash?

I opened a case at Apple (no cost since the phone is new). I can share my case number in private so others can relate to it.

Apple just recommended me to service the phone. They now think it could be a hardware problem. I'm unable to do that now, but if any of the other users having this problem do, please let me know what they told u. Thank you!

Good find. Just realized my 6S does this too. I'm on 9.1 PB2.

I've turned if off for now. Though my battery life hasn't been bad by any stretch, I felt like it could be better. Let's see how much this helps. I'm guessing a decent amount. Hopefully this is a software/firmware issue..

Same problem here.
Went to an Apple Store, they test my phone hardware and conclude that it's not a hardware problem.

I used Apple Store exposition's iPhone 6s and i had the same issue with each of them.

Maybe an iOS 9 issue for iPhone 6s.

Will wait for an update.

I'm experiencing this too on my 6s+. Hoping an update will clear it up. Is it ok to disable or will it affect navigation?

Same here on 6S+ and 9.1b5. It doesn't seem to affect battery life that much. I hope it's not a hardware problem...

I have contacted Apple Care and they do not know yet exactly what is the problem. I'm waiting they call me back.

Previously gps keep turning on for cell network but once I turned it off, weather app take the turn.

This is not a hardware or software issue. I reported that "problem" to Apple (Bug reporter) and this was the response:
This issue behaves as intended based on the following:

For the 6s/6s+ there is a new compass calibration algorithm that is always running on the motion coprocessor, so that is why you notice that the service is on frequently compared to older phone models. On older devices, the compass calibration service only ran when a client requested compass data.

However, this service does not turn on GPS, it simply uses GPS data when available (such as another app/service using location updates). Thanks for filing!

We are now closing this bug report.

Yes, please tell us your response :) Because I found out today that the compass calibration is on even if no other service/app uses the location. But if I understood the answer of my bug report correctly, this should not be happen in that situation, shouldn't it?

Well, on the other hand they said: "For the 6s/6s+ there is a new compass calibration algorithm that is always running on the motion coprocessor."
Since motion coprocessor is basically always doing something (counting steps, tracking pace, enabling always on "Hey Siri" etc) then the compass calibration might actually work as intended.
