You could pretty much already get it sim-free by just paying full price - it wasn't carrier locked (from an Apple store at least)
That was what I was told when I bought it -- and I am certainly expecting it - but I haven't travelled yet abroad to test.

So my unlocked full price att A1634 6S Plus is the same sim free phone as what Apple is selling.

What's strange is I have both att and Verizon. When I put in Verizon nano sim. When I go under cellular options. It only gives me "data only" option. I try to choose voice only or voice and data with Verizon and it won't let me choose it

But when I try to pay a regular call it works perfect. My sms text show up as my real Verizon phone number.

Unlike ATT, Verizon is unable to use data and voice at the same time which I think is the reason you are unable to make the selections you were trying

Seems like you can actually reserve the Sim-Free Models as they are currently IN stock. Checked some stores for the east coast that is.

I'm confused. I thought that, by a somewhat recent US law change, if you owned your phone outright and wanted to leave your carrier for another then your current carrier MUST unlock it if you request it. So if you've paid it off your Verizon phone after fulfilling a 2 year contract and want to move it to another carrier then Verizon will unlock it and any other carrier will activate it. ALL carriers MUST now do this. So who cares about buying a phone that's sim-free or unlocked anymore? An iPhone 6s is a mass produced thing - they're not making special editions for any carrier. I don't get why this thread even matters. I must be missing something fundamental...

Actually, the Verizon model is missing Band 30. This is the AT&T model, except that Verizon and Sprint will activate it without giving you the runaround that it won't work on their networks (even though it does).

Hmmm...
Well, I guess I never looked at the specs side by side. I just work at a new and used cell shop & know that when we get VZW iPhones in, we can sell them on any carrier. ATT ones we cannot.

Based on past experiences, the real question is whether Verizon will activate a "SIM Free" phone...

Usually they won't activate any phone unless the IMEI number is in their IMEI database.

I ordered a sim free, suppose to ship Oct 28-Nov 2. I have Verizon. I plan to use the sim on my iPhone 5.
I'll let you know if I have any problems.

They just need to do this from the start b.c there is a large market for buying phones outright.

I just bought an ATT model iPhone 6s for use with ATT but I am not on a contract with them. Is the new phone locked? Do I have to request to have it unlocked by ATT? Since I am purchasing from Apple it seems weird that it would be locked to ATT when I have no contractual obligation to anyone.

So you bought full price phone from AT&T and are still saddled with their high prices. Doesn't make sense. I went from paying $110.00 for two phones with a 2 year contract (with AT&T) to $40 for two phones with no contract with Cricket. I am using the same iPhone 5s. I switched once my contract was over. With Cricket, I am getting unlimited voice and text and 2.5GB of data for each line. I am part of a 5 line group save even though I just have two lines.

ok so the sim free is the better option in terms of being free and clear of any carrier. I thought so and it makes sense.

I've tried to get a Tmo unlocked phone to work with straight talk and have had issues. Meanwhile my friend bought the same phone from straight talk (probably a sim-free model) and his phone works on straight talk no issues.

Don't be so sure. SIM free versions are really meant to work on carriers that use a SIM card. Verizon, Sprint and StraightTalk that uses one of the CDMA carriers don't use SIM cards for voice anyway. At least with iPhone 6, a Sprint or Verizon iPhone will work on AT&T and T-Mobile but not the other way around. So, if you want a phone that is portable across Verizon and AT&T, it is better to buy the Verizon version rather than the AT&T version.

The SIM free models are supposed to show up on CDMA carrier white lists. Technically there is no reason that the AT&T or T-Mobile versions can't work on Sprint or Verizon. If you have an active SIM already you can insert it into an unlocked iPhone 6 or 6s (including Plus models) and it will work just fine. However the carriers themselves still cling to their outdated "activation" policies when you open a new account and thus sometimes refuse to do so if the phone doesn't show up in their database. That isn't an issue with the legacy GSM carriers who are used to opening accounts with SIM cards only.

Yep, just reserved a SIM Free 128 GB 6S Plus here in ATL. I'll be picking it up after lunch.

Every year this same issue ("sim-free") comes up. For three years now I've bought the unlocked T-Mobile phone prior to the release of the "sim-free" and stick in my own sim. This is much ado about nothing.

Nice, buying an iPhone in the US is the best way to go as the phone costs around 900 USD in Mexico.

According to Sascha Segan it is unlocked. See first paragraph:

It is not locked if you paid full price and got it from Apple.

I ordered a T-mobile 6s plus on the first pre-order day and paid full price, and when I received the phone on 9/25 I was able to confirm that it was unlocked. I ordered my wife a 6s directly from T-mobile and it was locked to T-mobile.

However, I'm returning my 6s plus so that I can get the SIM free version for band 30. Have it reserved for 11AM.

You do if you are opening an account with one of those carriers for the first time. Verizon and Sprint won't just sell you a SIM card unless they can add an IMEI to their database. It's a relic of the CDMA days that is no longer technically necessary, but they do it, anyway.

Prepaid my friend

This year the sim free has band 30 while the T-Mobile version does not. Slight difference this year it seems.

Yes! The one thing you get with the SIM free version is the included SIM removal tool (Apple doesn't add that with the Carrier SIM'ed, although unlocked, versions here in the U.S.) - worthless, but I want it.

Apple must be doing alot better with production this time, we didn't get SIM free here in the states until after the new year for the 6 / 6 plus.
I mean it's literally the same phone, they just print a different label, don't include a SIM, and throw in a removal tool.

Did you buy it from the apple store or the ATT store? If you bought it from the apple store, just restore it using itunes and will it say congratulations your phone is now unlocked. I got the att version from apple and it did that.
