From experience, yes. Dropped mine into a toilet at the airport in Atlanta after expelling a troublemaker prior to a transatlantic flight. Was a horrible experience to fish out but had to have something to take back to the Apple Store and get an Apple Care replacement.

Regarding the OP's original question, I always read articles on my 6+ while in the lavatory. FWIW, if I'm on MR, chances are I'm on the toilet. Might want to rethink some of those second hand iPhones.
