Ever since the update to iOS 10 the app switcher has been stuttering a lot. Strangely, performance depends on the number of apps that are active (or at least, shown in the switcher).
    • <5-7 apps = buttery smooth (like in the last version of iOS 9)
    • 7-12 apps = slight stutter
    • 12+ apps = stuttering mess
I might be imagining it, but some parts of the OS seem to suffer from too many open apps, as well, albeit not that much. For example, the message center.

I have already done a clean installation of iOS 10 (without restoring from backup), but to no avail.

Is anybody else having the same issue? And if so, were you able to fix it somehow? Granted, the app switcher may not be the most important part of the OS, but such things really bug me ...(#firstworldproblems). Especially that scrolling is perfectly smooth under any circumstances on my iPad Air 1.

Yup you're right. More active apps it stutters like crazy. It doesn't really bother me as its a lot easier just to find the app on spotlight or the homescreen rather than sift through 12 apps-- switching between two apps is all i do in the switcher.

I did notice some lag in the app switcher on my i6s too, but I remember seeing it in earlier versions of iOS 9. It wasn't fixed until iOS 9.2 or 9.3.
However, I can see lag not only in the app switcher but also in some apps like YouTube or even Notes (slight stutter when scrolling a long note) and a few other ones and that has been the case since iOS 9.

Same thing on my iPhone 7. It's just how iOS 10 is coded. They might fix it and clean it up. They might not.

I use reduce motion so I don't see the stuttering. With reduce motion off yeah I have the same stutters as does everyone else in the app switcher. No biggie.

My screen has uneven lighting and pinkish upper left quad and a yellow band at the bottom. And my jet black finish has TONS of micro scratches even though I use it in a leather case all the time and only take it out to put in an arm band when running.

But ya know what? The phone works great and the battery life is wonderful. I understand the OCD believe me but sometimes you just gotta let some things go. If you are looking for perfection you won't fine it on an iPhone. There are just too many made and nothing is perfect.

Same here on 6s and iPad Pro 9.7. Bad coding imo.

It's a part of Apple's planned obsolescence policy.iPhone 7 doesn't experience it.Unfortunately nothing you can do short of buying a new phone

Definitely yes.The app switcher on my 6 has stutters while my 7 plus doesn't.The same app switcher didn't stutter on older iOS versions on iPhone 6.Its done on purpose

Even if the app switcher works that way, and it would have to be that way for everyone essentially, that on its own doesn't prove what you are implying. But we all know that alredy.

But the fact is iPhone 7 is not lagging.I have both my iPhone 6 and 7 in front of me right now and its like they are running 2 completely different OS when smoothness is taken into account.I have yet to see any stutter on this phone and its been over a month since I had it.Even on MR,most complaints are from those on older devices.

It's there on the 7 plus, and on the ipad Pro (12.9)
With over 10 apps opened, it drops frames like a 4 year old android :(

I tend to close apps due to paranoia days (iphone 4) but ios10 is not apple's best moment...

If we are gonna use anecdotal evidence, here is some more: my friends ip7 consistently loads apps slower than my 6s (probably like half a second or 2 slower).

On the initial version of iOS9 that came with the 6s, 3D touch was laggy on the home screen, the switcher was almost unusable, and animations would stutter. Did you forget about this? It just needs a fix.
