It seems like the next iPhone should be called the 6se. Since it looks like Apple is going to a "tic toc toc" release pattern, it would make sense that the naming convention would be adjusted as well.

6, 6s, 6se, and the would make the 2017 phone the iPhone 7.

This also makes the awkward 7 to 8 name jump go away.

At the end of the day, we are just talking about a phone name here, something that doesn't matter. I see no issue skipping a 7s and jumping straight to 8 after this.

Personally, I think they are going have to break off from the # naming convention at some point anyways. Are we really going to be talking about "iPhone 13" in ten years?

Name is just a tag. Nothing more. iPhone itself is enough to show how it is. No need to bother the numbers

If the rumours are true that the 2017 model will have all the major upgrades and new design (plus it's the 10th anniversary model) I think they should save the name iPhone 7 for it. This year's model really does sound like just another step in the 6-series.

I wonder if Apple might forgo the "i" in the near future and go with "Apple Phone" (but using the apple symbol instead of the text 'Apple') similar to Apple Pay.

I honestly don't see the 6se name for a new phone. 5se wasn't a thing, and an "SE" model for a new model, even if it looks similar, would not work.
