I think if some is using their phones for 4K media production more than anything else 512GB storage is not overkill. Remember most people do not "talk" on their phones anymore rather they use text, social media, Skype, etc. With advances in photo/video technology the iphone is literally a portable media production center fully capable of producing an episodic adventure series.
I highly doubt Apple will try to cater to the amature film maker wanting to film their episodic adventure series. They don't even cater to Mac Pro users as they once did.

Now with the smart connector, imagine a docking station that puts you into a desktop mode. Oh I dont' know if video can go to that port but the OQO tried this, the concept was great but the wrong platform for sure and maybe too soon for tech at that point. I"m sure many are familiar with it's rise and demise.

iOS is far better placed and mature to move here as a NeXTSTEP ;)

Especially with basic iCloud storage

Meantime you get more storage and fill it up just about as Apple gets it's global server infrastructure in place to offer users GIGAooodles of space because if you have a 1TB iPhone you're gonna need at least 10GB iCloud free storage 100TB for $9.99 pm month.

Word.

I have a ton of content on my phone that I didn't get through iTunes. Why would you think that's a limiting factor? I also don't pay for extra cloud storage and like to keep my pictures with me (physically backed up at home). Lots of music too.

I'd take 512 if it were an option but will be fine with 256.

What apps are you using that lets you store tons of content on your iPhone? Sincerely curious. I just mentioned bought on iTunes because it doesn’t have cloud syncing for TV shows and movies like it does for music. If you downloaded that content from somewhere else or ripped it from a disc then no dice on downloading or streaming it. Are you cable syncing your iPhone to a computer? That’s the only way I can think of getting it on there, but I haven’t cable synced my iPhone in ages so I totally forgot about that.

I think if people need more than 256 GB at this point they possibly have a file hording problem and could do a little housekeeping. Even people hitting the 16 GB ceiling with just photos could probably delete 75% of their photos.

You are missing the overall point I made. The higher storage offering will be aimed at the PRO customer, the mass consumer will be happier with 256GB most likely.

We see this with the iPad now. The iPad Air 2 is probably perfect for most but those who want more, you now have the iPad Pro.

So, how is this supposed to wow us though. By basically everyone's admission in this thread they are not even the pro user. How is this going to help with the overall image of the device, as you claim? Apple can't wow me with something I don't want...

What does "pro" user even mean? I swear, I'm starting to hate that marketing buzz term. Everyone who has a job is a professional something. A hairdresser is a professional. A plumber is a professional. I'm a professional educator. What does it mean when people say that a device is for professionals? Having 512 GB of storage on my phone isn't going to help me do my job better, and I suspect that there is only a very small minority of users for whom it will.

Toughest crowd on earth... I'm postulating Apples next move, motivation etc. etc.

You kids think anyone who posts a blue sky muse should be treated and replied to as if it was a verbatim Press Release from Apple.

That's marketing fault which is so unprofessional in how it debases language and steals our children education from under their nose, oh and giving the unwashed masses the power of the universe in their hands. I mean what was Jobs & Co thinking! ;)

Meanwhile - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Professional

In Apple world, PRO is someone who might use that tool to complete a paying job. So they estimate you want top kit. That is generally the case with any manufacture. There are also the prosumer and all those other variable and novel terms invented to describe or understand a market and where the product fits in the marketplace in terms of it's appeal to who and so on.

Maybe apple should give up the numbering system and call the lot iPhone, or how about IPhone Go Large, iPhone Happy and iPhone Special Edition (oh wait!). :p

I can't tell if you're agreeing with me or not...

You are misunderstanding my stance. Your original post's entire premise was that Apple was going to wow us with a special 512GB device, or at least that is how it read. I mean, you are talking about Apple pleasing the crowd and outmaneuvering the market. We are saying that a ludicrously large storage space isn;t outmaneuvering anything.

If this isn't place for discussion I do not know what is. I wasn't taking anything you said as a verbatim pres release. I was saying the exact opposite of that. If we are just talking about the likelihood of a 512GB device, great. I understood this was being implied as a possible secret weapon or something...

FWIW there are a handful of ways Apple could blow me away, this just isn;t it. I'd love to see a drop in price, move to USB C, higher res screen, fast charging, waterproofing, and maybe some others I missed. With the exception of waterproofing, I am not terribly hopeful for any of those.

The main one I use is Infuse. I download movies to my phone over my wifi network from a HDD attached to my AirPort Extreme.

So here's the thing that annoys me. I don't criticize people for "only" getting a 16gb phone because they don't even need that much storage. I don't understand why others get so bothered by those of us that want more storage for our preferred uses. I had 192 gb of storage on my note 3 and would have over 300 gb if I were to get a note 7.

Of course Apple could solve this if they'd just allow expandable storage. I know, never going to happen.

I use infuse too in the same way. Do you store entire libraries on your phone? And do you download/encode h.265? It's an incredible codec with vastly superior compression. Ten one hour episodes of The Path were 5gb in 1080p. Battery killer though.

Haven't tried 265.

I do keep quite a few movies because I don't know what I'll be in the mood for (or if I need to pacify my kid in a pinch). I'd keep my entire library for convenience if possible though I know that won't happen. I'm just excited they're turning more and more into personal computers.

Give 265 a try. I am just sad my HTPC doesn't do hardware decoding of 265, but after seeing it on my phone I am looking into something that will. It saves so much storage it's incredible.

512 GB iPhone o_O no way you may have to wait for a looong time.they didn't even introduced 256 gb and you are demanding 512 GB  no way this is going to happen any time soon

First I don’t think it’s going to be boring. I think people just suddenly got shallow thinking the height of innovation has nothing to do with tech and everything to do with dramatic physical redesign.

I would be grateful for a 256 model so I can fit all my music and podcasts without micromanaging it, but I don’t see anybody needing more than that on such a small screened device. Are people really going to want all their movies and TV shows (only available if you bought them from iTunes) on there? Large photo libraries are already handled by iCloud sync that automatically puts the full res version in the cloud and stores a low res copy on the iPhone to save space.

I'll get as much storage as I can on my phone. Not only do I shoot lots of photos, but also lots of 60FPS HD video and some 4K video. This takes up lots of space.

I don't use iCloud photo sync for a variety of reasons (several of which revolve around the horrible uplink issues I have at my house ... the one ISP we can get doesn't switch well in the face of uploads, the stream gets saturated with ACKs and it just kills my entire internet connection, including even modest downloads (eg. web page loads) during any kind of upload), so having lots of on-board storage is important for me.

The cost of a 512GB flash chip would be insanely expensive. A 480GB SSD is over $300, imagine the cost of a chip the size of your thumb nail. Also, its not going to happen until the iPad Pro gets it and considering the iPad Pro just got 256GB, it won't happen for a while. I'm willing to bet there won't be a 256GB iPhone this time around. Its too expensive. iPads use two flash chips, while iPhones use one. Two 128GB chips are cheaper than one 256GB chip.

I don't think apple would release a 512gb iPhone anytime soon until comes the time when majority of people need more than 128gb of average space.

People are still happy purchasing 16gb iPhones so Apple agreeing on releasing a 512gb iPhone option is just a waste of an innovative presentation.

Agree there's no chance Apple includes 512 anytime soon.

I don't think these cards are as expensive bulk as many assume. Samsung is giving away 256gb cards with the note 7. I'm sure it helps they're the manufacturer.

As a consumer you can get 128gb cards for under $35. 200gb under $100 and 256 under $200. I wonder how much markup is built in?

A 256GB micro SD card is roughly $199 from SanDisk. You have to take into consideration the size. a 256GB SD card is $99. But as you go smaller, price increases. I can't even find a 512GB micro SD card. A 512GB regular sized SD card is $200-$400. Yes bulk is cheaper, by a lot, but probably not even enough to get a 256GB chip in the next iPhone.

I already agreed there wouldn't be a 512 storage option. If Samsung can afford a 64 GB chip and an extra 256 gb micro sd I think apple can put in a 256 option.

I know you agreed, I was just commenting on price.

Iirc the iPhone uses two chips (please correct me if I'm wrong). iPads may use more.

I guess you will sleep better now knowing someone agreed with you. 480GB SSD doesn't cost anywhere close to what you quoted. They can be had for around a hundred bucks now and dropping everyday. Best Buy was recently selling 256 GB flash memory drives for $50.
