Wondering the same thing. Wonder if they just put a ton of phones on backorder without having them ready to go

Yes and no.

This is a *guess*, but based on some experience in commercial shipping the order flow goes something like this:

[These are made up dates...just to help illustrate. Let's pretend we're ordering a Unicorn that hasn't been born at Apple yet.]

9/9 - I order phone from AT&T.
Order Status: In progress | Pending | Submitted

9/10 - A human at AT&T processes my order (this could be 9/9, but can be next business day).
Order Status: In progress | Preparing to ship (depending on which order status checker being used)

...an eternity passes while Apple get's their %@$# together and actually makes my phone...

10/11 - Apple loads up a plane full of phones for multiple customers (AT&T/BB/Retail/etc...) and it departs for Anchorage, AK. The phones then get on the first available flight to Louisville, KY after clearing customs inspections.

10/11-12 - Apple sends an advanced shipment notification to AT&T with a list of details on each phone they're getting on that plane (color/size/serial #/imei/etc...).

10/11-12 - AT&T loads that info into their system and starts matching available phones to orders - including mine!
Order Status: Backordered

10/12 - As phones land in Louisville, KY they're put on first available flight to TX, headed for AT&T fulfillment center.

10/12-13 - Phones are received by AT&T, boxed up and shipped on orders they were assigned to above.
Order Status: Shipped (tracking # available, but has no info yet)

10/12-13 - Phones are picked up by carriers at AT&T, then processed at carrier point of origin.
Order Status: Shipped (my tracking # works - the phone is really on it's way to me)

...ok, that's my theory - right, wrong or sideways. :)

Interesting theory. I feel like you're probably right. It does not account for some people leaving Backorder status within a few hours though.

I think you're probably spot on. Perhaps as the glut off preorders get caught up, they can be a little more deliberate in assigning promised phones to placed orders. Based on your theory, maybe the linking of the phone to the order was happening at att facilities, creating a shortened backorder window. Now, perhaps that assignment of phone to order is occurring while the phone is in transit to them since they are more assured of what they will receive and what orders they need to fill. Just more theory about why we don't know more about our backorders.

It does if there's delays in Apple sending the ASN (Advanced Shipment Notification) to AT&T, or AT&T processing the ASN after receipt. The back end of how the message gets from A to B is an impressive technology infrastructure (EDI - Electronic Data Interchange), but if a human is asleep at the switch "delays" can happen.

Either way, the steps in the process are still the same. Backorder happens after Apple ships to AT&T, but before AT&T fills your box with a phone. Short backorder just means somebody or some system is slacking related to the ASN.

In the case where folks get stuck on "forever" backorder I bet the phone was lost/damaged/swiped/stalled in customs before being processed as actually received in TX by the AT&T warehouse.

It also explains how orders get shipped out in what seems to be "random" order compared to our order date / times. Since the individual units are matched with the "next order in line please" in advance of actual receipt by AT&T it can get all jumbled up as we all compare our relative spot "in line".

Fun times these are! I just want my phone already...lol.

We learn so much through this whole process. How the industry/Apple handles huge shipments of phones, stock, logistics, statistics, how to deal with crippling anxiety...

My wife has had her phone for a week and it is awesome. It's making the wait unbearable. And the fact that I can't check the 6737 number to see if it went to back order. Hopefully next week. Kills me seeing phones showing up in the stores when there are still people waiting on their orders. The only way to get a phone the day they came out was if you ordered one. Now is seems like the only way to get one is if your checking stores. Seems like Apple has all their priorities straight. This is my fourth iphone and could very well be my last. Who am I kidding I'm sure I will be back in two years.

so i was lurking the at&t jet black thread and someone who got the date change and went on backorder yesterday just got their tracking number! I'm positive we're getting our phones this week :) their config was jb plus 128gb I believe

My MB 128 shipped today (full details in sig). As of 6:30AM eastern time this morning it was not on back order yet, got the shipping notification around 7:30pm tonight. I was busy with an event today where I couldn't call the 866 number to check and the *6737 doesn't work for me so I don't know if it went to backorder at some point today or not.

Finally got mine, just wanted to say thanks to everyone who suggested their own tips, the JB iPhone Plus is worth it. Not planning to use a case, just a BSE skin at the back, it is gorgeous.

Thinking of doing the exact same thing! Seems like it's a no brainer to buy one at the Apple Store if they're available. Thinking of ordering one at my local store and leaving work early to pick it up. They even have a AT&T next option so seems like a win/win
You should do it, though just a heads up the Apple store I went to would only let me do their IUP or full price, no at&t next was presented. I just went with the full price anyway since I was in a hurry.

If you want to use ATT next cancel atleast an hour before you pickup your new Iphone. Ive had friends in town have that kind of issue when they show to reservations and there time would lapse scrambling so they got turned away. For what its worth
I was in a hurry so I didn't even thought of canceling my pre order, that was due to the wind storm, so I just paid full price.

same boat onlne says preparing to ship,866 number says not instock, *ordr# says backorder,
*ordr# i cheched thursday afternoon and no change since then. if no movement today safe to assume were not getting it untill the end of next week.

Same here...So it seems backorder status does not mean anything now...

I'm starting assume that.

Becausee ever since they moved everyone's shipping date up a couple weeks people like my self have been in backorder. Where as before within a few hours of backorder you received shipping info.

I've been following this thread and Everytime a pattern starts and you think you have it figured out a curve ball is thrown lol
