iPhone XS iPhone 7 / 8 > iPhone X / XS

In some sick twisted way I can't stop thinking of trading in my 8 to give an 8+ a try. I would prefer FaceID (upcoming Gen 2), but the bezels don't even bother me, the LCD is nice because I like a plain white background at full brightness, and Qualcomm modem FTW.

I just looked at the 6+/7+/8+ is 401 PPI and the X/XS/MAX is 458 PPI. I suppose you might be able to see that with the right conditions (the 'retina' PPI was always marketing malarkey). Quick question though, if you are able to see the difference between 401 PPI and 458 PPI, can you also see the 'grain' created by the the non-uniform subpixels on the OLED? Does it not bother you or can you not see it?
If one is really picky about the display, get what is best for you. I find the max display better than 8+. Maybe it’s because of the increased contrast ratio. Each have different characteristics. Choose the one you like best or the best of the worst. Didn’t answer the question, but if I let every nuance of imperfection drive me crazy I wouldn’t enjoy life.

So the answer is yes then. I just really wish OLED displays would use uniform subpixels then I could enjoy it without compromise. I also wish reviewers and users wouldn't pretend it isn't there. I suffered with a low PPI Pentile Android phone for years and hated the non-uniform subpixels, seeing it again on the XS (even at a higher PPI) brings back PTSD. It just seems no matter what phone I choose, a compromise has to be made.

The answer is if you have to take out a magnifying glass don’t get either display. My display is uniform and if you can see non-uniform subpixels at a foot away you should ratchet down your expectations of current display technology. I use the phone a good distance away from my face.

Sold the XS and fully back to the 8. Very happy with the decision and I’ll likely keep the iPhone 8 & iPad Pro 10.5 combo for quite some time.

This explains why I didn’t notice a speed difference going to the 8 from the XS. Both have a big bump from the 7 though I honestly didn’t notice a huge difference...

We desperately need TouchID brought back. Anyone who says that FaceID is as consistent as TouchID may be stretching the truth just a bit. Apple fanatics...it’s okay to admit that Apple is superior in many ways compared to other manufacturers but this doesn’t mean that they aren’t without fault at times. Now don’t get me wrong FaceID works about 90% of the time so it’s good. But I think TouchID is greater and works 99% of the time.

Disclaimer: my work phone is an iPhone 8 that I use daily and my personal phone is an iPhone XS Max.

Keep in mind your 8 has TouchID generation 2, while the Xs/Max are like FaceID generation 1.5 since there were minor software improvements over the X. I would fully expect real generation 2 FaceID to be substantially better, to the point it's like TouchID generation 1 vs. 2 - where nobody wants to be caught dead being stuck using a FaceID or TouchID generation 1 device anymore. And to think, unlike FaceID generation 1, nobody ever complained about TouchID generation 1; so I'd expect the difference between FaceID 1/2 to be even greater than that of TouchID 1/2.

Not sure this is a fair comparison. The difference between Touch ID gen 1 versus gen 2 was a good quarter to half second which is huge in terms of authentication speed on a mobile device. Apple will surely refine Face ID but the difference speed wise will likely be negligible. I was very skeptical of Face ID until I got my XS. It’s as fast as Touch ID gen 2 if not faster most of the time. When I pick up my phone it recognizes me before I can swipe up to unlock. The improvements may be in horizontal unlocking and maybe a wider scope.

I would say touch ID isn’t necessarily more ‘fast’ for my applications when unlocking, but it is more accurate where I don’t have to input my passcode, as I would with Face ID. (I.e Laying down, to far away, etc). But I don’t believe touch ID is coming back. At least not how we used to expect it with home button. The reason I believe that, is Apple believes that Face ID is a stronger form of biometric security over touch ID, and the way they value privacy and security, obviously will override any other concern, which obviously is Face ID is their future for the time being, at least worded by Tim Cook it is.

Dom’t Miss the home button on my Xs Max at all. faceID works great even in low light.
When lying in be with my face and double chins all distorted the FaceID works perfectly.

Notch?can’t get on board with seems to be nothing but OCD issues. Not even noticeable.

"Fuzzy" pixels/screen. See above.
