Yesterday evening, my I tried to turn on the flashlight on the iPhone, and it simply wouldn't come on. The button in the command center would respond, but the actual light wouldn't come on. I then tried to open the camera and switch it to "video" to be able to turn the flash on that way, and also no cigar. But also realized that the rear camera wasn't displaying anything, although the front facing camera did.

I let it be for the night and didn't pay much mind to it. This morning, I tried using the flashlight again, and nothing. I opened the camera, and again rear didn't work, front did. I did a simple reboot of my phone, and that didn't fix it. I did a "hard reset", holding down the sleep/wake button and "volume down" button, and upon rebooting, nothing again.

I tried a 3rd party app like Snapchat and Instagram, and even in those, the rear camera wouldn't display anything. The camera would "flip" when I press the button, and then it was just a black screen. I went back into the stock camera, and went to video mode and the flash settings just displays a ⚠️ and an alert comes on that indicates "Flash is disabled. The iPhone needs to cool down before you can use the flash". My phone is not hot by any means, and this truly has me puzzled.

Any ideas anybody? Could it be hardware or software? I wanted to attempt another home fix before heading to the Apple Store tomorrow on a walk in basis. Since they have no appointments until Wednesday. :(

most likely hardware.

my friend's iPhone 7 camera stopped working a few days ago. he made an appointment and they changed the camera in the store.

This happened to my SE a couple of weeks ago. Haven't got around to taking it in yet but I fear the camera HW needs replacing.

Went to the Apple Store today and they swapped it out for a brand new phone. They ran diagnostics, and there was indeed a failure with the camera.

Same here, went to the store diagnostics showed faulty camera. Tried software fixes but no solution. All sorted out under warranty.
