At work yesterday, a filing cabinet essentially tipped forward and smashed my wife's iPhone 7 (128GB). It looks like the bottom 1/3 took the brunt of it with the screen smashed. There is obvious impact damage on the bottom back of the device as well.

The phone wakes and the home button still recognizes her thumb (though more intermittently). The screen registers finger movements everywhere and the device works. However, she cannot reply to texts from the lock screen. Also the battery is dying off at an incredible rate.

Because of the circumstances of the accident, work will be paying for the iPhone X to replace this one.

My question is how to tell the extent of damage and whether this iPhone 7 is salvageable with a screen replacement or is a lost cause.

Thanks

In the middle of several books.
I would try backing up the phone with iTunes, to try and save any important files. From what you described, the phone has more problems that are just now showing symptoms. It’s probably not worth the extra money to try and repair, especially when work will replace it.

Make sure your backup is encrypted.

For it to bust the screen like that and damage the case, chances are it could have more problems.

Take the advice on backing it up, if you can and make sure it is encrypted.

Could we get another image of the back with the case removed?

Case off and significant bend at bottom. Surprised/impressed the iPhone still works. The cabinet was very heavy...

Why encrypted? Just asking as I don’t know what it’s for.
