I would not buy a 8 now as the se2 should arrive hopefully in a month or 2

But the 7 costs just half of it. So if really budget u have your answer. I know a lot people who are still fine with the 6s. Ios updates for maybe 2 years. But just a guess

Wait for March 2020 and see if there's a new budget phone announced. If so, get that.
If not, get the 8 because of the A11 chip that is a good upgrade over the A10 - namely it can use all cores simultaneously. Every Apple A-chip can do so, from the A11 onwards.

What is your friend's budget?
Also, what does your friend do with the phone?

If your friend wants to pay the lowest price, tell them to buy the iPhone 7.

In my opinion it’s still a really good phone. It runs the latest version of iOS brilliantly, and (IMHO) is perfect for someone who wants to make calls/use the internet/send emails/send text/take photos (and isn’t going to be pixel peeping or obsesively concerned with image quality). No idea how long the 7 will receive updates; at a guess, it’ll get 1 (iOS 14) and potentially 2 (iOS 15). That being said, you can still use your phone after it’s stopped receiving official updates from Apple, just note that some apps may no longer be able to be updated/used with an older version of iOS.

If you want to play games, or do any picture/video rendering, the iPhone 8 would be a better choice. The more powerful CPU combined with a superior camera is a better combination (IMHO) compared to the 7.

Hope that helps!

iPhone 7

Because iPhone 8 only has 2GB RAM and isn't likely to perform well in the long run. The best bet is obviously SE2 with A13 with 3GB RAM.

my friend is not a tech-fan.. the main things on the phone is to make calls, use internet, mails text... like you said. also the camera must not be the best one.. the main thing is, the phone should work without problems for the next 3 years..

The iPhone 7 will work fine for more than the next 3 years. I have a 7 and an 8, and there is no reason for me to want anything more at this moment in time. In fact, I am trying to cut down on my dependance on the handheld and move more towards establishing a clear line between what I achieve utilising the desktop/ laptop environment and what I do with the handheld environment. Blurring of these lines by technology has created an unnecessary ruckus in life.

There are few things to keep in mind:
- if your friend uses the phone a lot, s/he might need to replace the battery after about 2 years;
- some iPhone 7 suffer from a Loop-disease (an audio chip problem specific to iPhone 7);
- iPhone 7 may not get the latest iOS support for the next 3 years. It will still work, of course, but will not have the latest features.

ok thank you.. but the main message is that he would be good with the iphone for more 2 years...
apart from the battery and other problems that could also happen to the newest phone..

If you don't need wireless charging, then I would recommend the iPhone 7.

I loved that phone. 2nd favorite iPhone of all time.
