Immediately after upgrading to iOS 13 my iPhone 7 has been overheating and crashing constantly. Some apps, like the App Store, won’t stay open for more than a few seconds before crashing. The updates since haven’t helped. It’s rendered the phone borderline unusable at times, and I can’t make phone calls for too long because the phone gets too hot for my ear.
It was doing it again today so I took the case (slimline plastic) off to see if it helped and noticed that there is obvious damage to the exterior of the phone. The colour in the aluminium has faded around the buttons. The phone is a couple of years old, but this damage definitely wasn’t there prior to the upgrade.

Has anyone else had such a serious problem since the upgrade?

Doesn't seem normal. You might want to reinstall as new without using a backup to see if it helps. That aside, perhaps there's something on the hardware side of things and/or the battery itself where something is damaged in some way and is behind the issues you've been seeing.

Battery is a likely culprit since it was replaced shortly before the upgrade. I restored from new just before the upgrade because I had to after the battery was replaced. It could just be an old phone that can’t hack it any more.

It doesn’t explain the discolouration, but that might be pure confidence (still not sure how it happened though or why it’s only in those spots.

Could be the battery or its replacement that resulted in some sort of a hardware issue on some level.

Was it a battery from Apple? Did they do the replacement?

We don’t have Apple here in NZ, but they have authorised resellers and repairers. It was done through my work so I’m fairly sure they’d use an authorised repairer.

Having used it today without the case it gets almost too hot to touch. I know that sounds crazy, but it is what it is. I’m definitely going to get it checked out.

It's very likely a bad battery that's overheating. I suggest not using the phone and keeping it turned off less you may be dealing with a phone on fire. Looks like the heat discolored the case.

Battery, CPU wouldn't be able to produce so much heat. Get it back to repair store and replace the battery asap. Ofc make a fresh backup and don't use it until replacement.
