If the phone gets pretty warm, then that suggests that there is a lot of work being done in the background. Do you have background app refresh enabled for many apps? I have kept background app refresh and location services off for third-party apps and I have been getting great battery life from my iPhones for years.Seriously. I get MAYBE 5 hours of use out of it before it's dead. Anyone else with this issue? My phone also gets pretty warm.

So you're saying I should remove the lightning port as well?Needs more Courage.
I havn’t found this issue. In the gym I don’t use many % at all. Better than my 6s plus for some reason. One source of a little extra drain this year is playing audio out of the dual speakers.
Try using the speakers for over an hour and look at your usage statistics. It will be a larger proportion than the 6s plus not than likely. And I'm not talking about using the speakers at less than 100% volume.Sounds like you have a faulty unit as my phone lasts me from 6am till 11pm at night when working through the day. I imagine it will last me a lot longer when I don’t use it as much at home where I will more often than not use my ipad pro.
