Funny you mention this since I had the same thing occur before returning my 7 Plus (matte black). It was on the top right edge above the camera. Didn't see it at first, put it in a case for the month I used it, and saw it only when taking it out to return it. Very strange. Apple's finishes and coatings on all of their products have been lackluster, which is why I'm hoping it will be resolved with this year's iPhone being glass and steel. Is anyone getting discoloration on their matte black?
it looks like an oil stain that you cant wash off. I'm getting it on the back next to the bottom antenna lines
Ill post a picture later tonight.I gotta see pics of it ... Can you get it in a picture?
Photos added.OP, can you post a picture?
I've had my matte black 7 for 3-4 months and have no discoloration. I do have a slim case on it if it make a difference.
Tried it, still there. Is it... hand oil?
Will a soap and water rag clean it off?
Ah, I see. That's not what mine had (mine looked a little like leopard spots as far as the shape goes). That looks like wear, like someone else mentioned already.Photos added.
I already have a chip but I don't really care. Give it a couple of days and you will get used to it.Is there a paint you can buy to touch up the matte black? I literally have had my matte black iPhone for 5 hours, dropped it, and it already has a chip that's silver. I know is my fault and it's OCD to be bothered by it, but Jesus is that annoying... luckily I have T-Mobile Jump on Demand - so back you go come Fall for the new ones.
This is how mine looks Idk if it's discoloration or oil marksPhotos added.
Was that for mine? This thread is a bit old, but I just wanted to mention what others had said. That's most likely due to taking it in and out of a case, or out of your pocket. My glasses have that near the end where I always take them on and off, but that's plastic. The other thing to keep in mind is that a matte type of paint/color will usually be harder to keep pristine.
Does mine look like grease or discoloration? My rubbery UAG case leaves a greasy looking honeycomb pattern of marks on the back of my matte black 7 Plus. Cloths and soap and water won't work but a paper towel soaked in isopropyl alcohol works and so far hasn't harmed the finish.
Was that for mine?
I really can't tell from that photo. All I know is that my case interacts with my finish somehow to produce little marks the same shape as the lining of the case. I couldn't get them off except to either use a lot of friction which seemed it could eventually be damage to the finish or a light wipe with isopropyl alcohol. My marks look more like the marks that were posted originally. Kind of shiny. Was that for mine?

My iPhone 6 gold had a simliar issue. Thankfully it isn't too noticeable in most lighting or on phone location. Thanks all, so looks like it's actually scuffing, I don't use a case so I guess the surfaces have worn it off a bit.
Normal wear and tear. It's matte, but with friction with your hand, it's going to go like thatPhotos added.
