So I upgraded my kid's phone yesterday from the 32GB 7 Plus to the XR. Verizon wouldn't accept the phone as a trade because it wouldn't accept a charge from the standard Apple lightning cable... which I don't use. It accepts charges from aftermarket cables just fine. Maybe something wrong with the port, I have no idea.

Anyway, I ran the phone thru Apple's trade in program and it said something like $210. Cool right? So I go into the store and he checks it out (phone was at 100% and rep never attempted to charge it) and I end up with a gift card for $270.

Definitely not complaining... just amazed that I got that much for it.

Probably dirt lodged inside the charge port. That iPhone typically sells for around $230-$250 on Swappa, so you got a great deal. If it was a 32GB version, the guy at the Apple Store likely made a mistake and credited you for a higher storage model. Typically Apple trade ins are always lower than what you can sell the phone for on your own.
For once, the customer comes out on top. Not very common

Can I ask how much you ended up paying for the XR after the trade in ?
Did Apple approve the trade in and did you get the full amount ?

I am in the same spot.
Saw the $270 trade in value and had me tempted.
My work phone is the 7+ which has been working so great for 3 years now.
If the XR 2019 version releasing in a few weeks is not that great of a leap in tech then I may be looking at the XR available now...

Agreed, I have been checking sale pricing on the 7+ on Swappa and eBay.
It is unusual to see Apple offering more than online sales.

My initial thought was... did he think I traded in a 128GB phone? Either way I know I wouldn't have gotten anything better selling it on CL. I don't know if I want to do that again anyway... done it before but having to dodge scammers just makes it annoying. Getting the $270 gift card literally took 5 minutes.

I actually did the deal thru Verizon the previous day. Wife traded in her 8 Plus ($300 from Verizon) for the XS Max 256GB $1199 and got the 64GB XR for the kid for free. Buy one get one. I know new phones are coming but this deal was good enough that I went for it.

Then I took his 7 Plus to Apple and got the $270 gift card after Verizon wouldn't accept it in trade. Turned out in my favor because Verizon only offered me $165 for his phone prior to the trade refusal.

So... I will use the gift card when I upgrade my 8 Plus in 2020. I'm fine with it and am not interested in the new 11's coming out... a 3rd year with the 8 Plus is fine with me.

I will admit though... those animoji things are pretty cool. The wife and kid are having a field day with them... LOL

They only offered $165 for the 32 GB 7 Plus? Ouch. The phone still goes for $569 new right now in September 2019.

Anyhow, I'm keeping my 128 GB 7 Plus for another year. Performance is decent, and I didn't want to downgrade to a single-lens camera with the XR. Then again, I'd take it if it were free. ;)

Was that offer from the phone carrier ?

Apple gives $270 for the 7+ I just checked.

@TravisPNW was offered $165 from Verizon.

I live in Canada so the amounts are different.

Apple only offers CAD$260 for the 7 Plus 128 GB according to their website. That works out to US$196. Lame.

Typically, Orchard offers more than Apple Canada, and their app tells me I'd get CAD$338, which is US$255. Sometimes they give a little boost to that too if it's in mint condition, so roughly about US$270. But that's for the 128 GB model. I'm surprised TravisPNW got US$270 for the 32 GB model.

Between the trade in on the 8+, the BOGO deal and the gift card, looks like you did well. Nice!

Does the Apple trade in program change trade in prices depending on which Apple trade in page you use ?

I just checked using the 7+ at the Apple store trade in value online, and the trade in value dropped to $195.

But then when I go to the XR purchase page with trade in, the same phone gets $270.

Does the Apple trade in program change trade in prices within a week ?

I just checked again, and the trade in value dropped from $270 to $195.

Can this be true = even without the release of the new iPhone 11 ???
My 7 Plus 128 GB still is seeing CAD$260 in Canada, which is US$197. Same as yesterday, and matches your US$195 quote.
