It seems obvious to me that the darkness and shadow in the pictures was intentionally done for emphasis. Probably not the best choice to show off the camera. They're trying to be artsy and show a range of possible photos I guess, but I personally would have showcased brighter and more vibrant pictures.
Even so, if these are considered "brutal" my iPhone 6 must have one of those pinhole cameras that kids make in school!

I don't think brutal is a term I'd use to describe them. But we do have to see how they compare against other devices. And to be fair, Android has been DESTROYING the competition. Heck even the HTC 10 is receiving praise from dpreview and dxo. It's becoming harder and harder to find a phone with a poor camera in several price points. So it would be interesting to see how apple performs.
All that said, I have a full frame (sony rx1rii) so I don't ever have to really say which is better. Just point to my Sony
Ok brutal may be a tad harsh, but a poor choice of dark pics. Did we need 3 v dark pics with neon lights? What were they trying to emphasise? The iPhone 6 and 6s had better pics on the website at the time, although I'd guess the newer camera has better hardware.
Don't get me wrong, there is impressive detail in all the shots, but there is in the s7 and HTC 10 and even LGs lg4 from 2015,and all have raw support.

You won't get the true quality unless you're looking at a wide color display or on the actual device
You mean I'm not looking at it right?
I'm using 27inch professional monitor.
Some of those pics are too dark, face it.
I'm sure hardware is fine. Needs a better advertisement campaign.

Game changer. Very impressed with DSLR-like performance from a phone.
Game changers were the LG G4 18months ago, then the s7 6months ago. IPhone 7 I'm very unconvinced from what I've seen but hopeful.

Wow, "brutal" is a bit extreme. For a cell phone sensor, as others have mentioned, the range shown in the photos is pretty impressive. The lack of noise in the night shots is pretty damn good for a cell phone camera...
I will concede lack of noise is impressive. Lack of detail in overly dark areas less so.
