    Hi all,

Would appreciate you could kindly help me with a random issue I'm having on my iPhone 7 running iOS 10.3.3.

Past 2/3 months or so when making or receiving calls, I can hear the the other person but they can't hear me. It's completely random. Ending the call and re-dialling usually resolves the problem.

I've dropped my phone a few times, could it be that my mic is damaged? Any way of finding out?

    Many thanks.

There are several possibilities here. You could have a faulty microphone. This is easy to repair and can be DIY or you can bring it to a shop or Apple directly.

Apple is also aware of microphone issues but they claim they are related to iOS 11. You can read up more about this here.

Finally, the iPhone 7 series of phones seem to have some major issues with the Audio IC on the logic board. People complain about various microphone, headphone and speaker issues with these devices and once the simple stuff has been eliminated (resets, updates, replacing parts etc.), logic board issues become the only reason left.

The iPhone 7 series of devices suffers from weak traces on the pcb which crack and break. It is a similar design flaw to the iPhone 6 Plus, known as Touch Disease. On the iPhone 7 series, the weak traces are underneath the Audio IC, hence all of these audio issues the repair community has been seeing. Replacing the Audio IC and strengthening the weak traces with micro-jumpers is a permanent repair. This type of failure requires a micro-soldering and is not DIY.

Thanks for the reply. Didn't know it could be that complicated. How much would Apple charge for a diagnostic? I'm in the UK. My phones warranty expired back in March.

Talk up the fact that there is a well documented issue with microphones on the iPhone 7 series...you may get a cool genius who will replace the device for free or almost free. Back up your data first!

I'm tempted to take it in but the fact that I've dropped my phone a number of times and it's obvious from the marks on the edges I don't think they will. Worth a shot anyway I guess!

Small scuffs shouldn't be an issue. You don't have much to lose :>).

I spoke to Apple support. They told me to update to latest iOS and see if the problem persists.
To be honest, if it was a hardware issue with the mics, surely it would be a constant thing.
