I’ve been reading the numerous reports from all the tech sites about all the amazing features that will almost certainly be in the iPhone 8 (or whatever they are going to call their higher end iPhone) from the edge to edge OLED display, new design, wireless charging etc but what about the lower end iPhone? The 7s....what’s going to compel the people who can’t afford Apples new premiere iPhone? I’m not saying I don’t care about the amazing new tenth anniversary iPhone that is all but certain to come out, I’m just curious if they exhaust all these features on the premiere iPhone then what about the lower end ones that will be under the $999.00 price?

Thanks,
Rob

Why does the 7s have to be compelling? Perhaps some will not be interested in a 5.8 OLED iPhone. Not to mention, the 7S will likely be the most popular model because will be most affordable as well. The 7S is still rumored to have wireless charging and camera enhancements.

I am hoping they have improved the 7s as a music player more than anything. All others have moved on to offer Hi Def capabilities. Although you can currently make your current iphone Hi Def capable it would be great if Apple offered something straight out the box to include IOS 11(ITunes) to support these files.

Great question. From the leaks it appears that the iphone 7s won't get a redesign. It might be a tough sell in my opinion.
I think the iPhone 8 isn't going to be a big "redesign" either . From the leaks , the exterior build looks relatively the same - other than the camera being vertical and the OLED screen- but i hope im wrong.

Don't you think it should be a little bit exciting for those who are due to upgrade? It's still a major purchase for many and those coming off a 2 year contract will want a bit of hype around the new iPhone 7S. I'm getting bored of all the buzz around the 8 already on tech sites as you'd think it was going to be the only phone unveiled next week.

Compelling was my initial comment for those who find it to be , but exciting is user dependent. However, I think for those who have an older model iPhone who have been waiting to upgrade, this will be a good year for both models, no matter what someone chooses. It really is dependent on what someone prefers out of either model. But the OLED Model has taken the spotlight, as expected.

I'd be surprised if the 7S was anything amazing. I think a glass back, wireless charging and improved camera is probably the limit. Failing that the first two and a CPU that matches the 8. I could just about put up with that as an upgrade from a 6.

EDIT: I've just read the story on the front page about manufacturing issues with the 8. That's worrying for the amount of cash it's costing. If the 7S is ridiculously devoid of upgrades I might end up on Android. No one wants that, especially me.

Wireless charging
Glass back and metal edges
Enhanced camera
New CPU (same as iPhone 8)
I would imagine Apple would also be adding new features that are specific to 7s/7s+ that aren't available on the 7

I think Apple wants to avoid a "5c" situation when they had a model that was seen as "lower end," so I assume they will have some stuff people want to buy

Just the new tweaked design, with likely upgraded camera and latest cpu should be enough, I mean what more do most people really want/ expect a phone to do exactly? The Edition will be the shiny toy for those who want to play with the latest 3D/VR/AR tech, the 7s and Plus will be the phones for those who just want to upgrade to a similar experience from a 6/S, in a fresh package, with slight improvements.

I suppose the 5C was released as a budget device though and was pretty much a 2 year old phone with a plastic back on it. The iPhone 7S is in line with previous flagship iPhone releases at their price point. This is why i'll be disappointed if Apple treat it as a budget device while charging a premium for it. That wouldn't be very fair to loyal customers IMO.

I agree. IMO, Apple made the best iphone with the 6 which is why they will still offer the same design with new Hardware and improved shell. The Iphone X (whatever they call it) is a test phone for the 8 or 9 which will completely replace the old body.

The 6 is a pretty golden design, and with the new colours/ tweaked design of the 7, and now the glass design of the 7s they've kept it fresh enough to be interesting. Yep, I think you're probably right - and I can only speak for myself, but I definitely prefer to be at the comfier trailing end of technology! ;)

I think it's a bit too much of a generalization to imply that only those that can't afford the 8 would be interested in the 7s. I could afford the 8, but if the current rumors turn out to be accurate, I don't think I want one or find it reasonable to spend such an amount on it. Losing TouchID is likely to be a bit too much.

If the 7s improves the camera in a meaningful way (the one in my current 7 is surprisingly mediocre compared to competition), then I'll be looking at an upgrade provided that Apple Pay does indeed make it here. Other improvements are welcome, and luckily it isn't too long before we know them.

Of course, depending on what comes out, I can just as well stay on my 7 for a bit longer or just move my main SIM back to my Android.

If I do upgrade this year, it would most likely be the 7s+ or whatever it's going to be called. Personally I like the "S" cycle years to improve upon an existing design. I'd rather wait a year and have them fine-tune the 8 or X or Edition whatever it's called. Just my $.02

The "S" models have more incremental updates, but typically are more refined with the Ram and speed. The 6s impressed me with the addition of 3D Touch, one of my favorite features.

I was just getting on to ask about this. I was thinking this might be my first year ever to not upgrade at launch. IDK if I'm that interested in the 8, but I just am not sure if the 7S will be enough of an improvement over my 7 to jump on it. I guess I'll have to check out all the details after the announcements (I can never watch them because my internet doesn't stream at all - damn LTE). Wireless charging might be a dealbreaker though. I could certainly get on board with that!

I have been doing the 12 month Apple plan, so upgrading is pretty easy if I decide to go that route.

Agreed. I'm a fan of 3D Touch myself. Didn't think I'd ever need/use it but it's really become a nice addition.

Secretly (well not anymore) I'm wishing that the 7s is priced at $550, with the same 7 internals.... Like a 5c situation, but not plastic.

$450 level would be the SE with..... man, SOMETHING new. You can buy that phone for less than $200 in places.

Hopefully, I'm right, and they focus most of the upgraded stuff on the iphone edition (whatever), and leave the 7 internals alone and only change the outside like the 5c.

$550 and I'm sold on the 7s

edit: forgot about the Apple upgrade plan.... they have to have a phone at the $650 price point.

I think a really outstanding camera system would be the only improvement I would be pleased with on the iPhone 7s.
And I do not need smart features, just make it take great photos in every light conditions.

Wireless charging especially combined with Apple proprietary solutions is worthless and if it’s qi compatible it would be cool but nothing amazing.

I can’t think of any other features that would justify the price difference of about 250-300€/$ between 7 and 7s.

Camera improvements would be nice indeed. I wish the iPhone could once again compete and surpass Samsung flagships when it comes to camera. Wireless charging is a mixed bag for me. I like it as a concept and I have a few Qi chargers waiting to be used again, but if Apple ends up with the rumored "Qi + Apple proprietary DRM glued on top of it to exclude 3rd party chargers" approach, it's quite likely to leave such a bad taste in my mouth that I could skip the upgrade altogether.
