I believe that since these phones are mass produced there are duds that happen. I bought an 8 on launch day and got a bad screen with a bad shadow on it. Two days later I had a brand new one. Apple support were great but they kept escalating the problem to trouble shoot it. T mobile just gave me a new one. It is my first defective Apple product but again I just figure it was one of a few bad ones.

People have it wrong. Splitting open is a feature of the phone. They want it to split open so you can experience the entire iphone 8.

I’m more concerned with gold-gate. The closest metal that chameleon color is similar to is copper, and the last thing it ever looks like is gold.

Gold gate? My wife has the gold 8+, in my opinion it’s the best looking color Apple has ever produced. It’s stunning in person. I have the space grey, which I like a lot, but I have some color envy lol.

Wait till it is taken care of! I waiting for Blackm Friday to possibly buy my 8! Hoping Apple gives a discount on the 256GBs. They usually only discount the lower storage models!

#SwellGate

As long as it doesn't happen in flight on an airplane.

Perhaps those were the phones intended for the iFixit teardowns?

I find hard to believe a store will swap that out at no cost
Why wouldn't they? A swelling battery is a potential safety issue. A customer is rather unlikely to be able to cause a battery to swell up under normal use. Plus if the rest of the device is in good cosmetic order the Apple Store can hardly accuse the customer of dropping the phone and causing that amount of damage.

Because it’s the Apple genius. They will somehow say you mishandled it, etc

The way they act these days in giving replacements under warranty and fixing issues SMH

I think for future Apple purchases, I will avoid being an early adopter to let all the defects get handled, if it's isolated or even mass enough for a recall.

IPhone 8 is not much different from an iPhone 7, so why would this be true since I never heard of iPhone 7's splitting open?

Cue the new hashtags.

"Apple is investigating reports of its new iPhone bursting open, days after the flagship device went on sale. Pictures on social media showed an £800 iPhone 8 Plus handset that appeared to have split alongside the side. One owner said the device's casing cracked open as it was charging, according to Taiwanese media. The phone had reportedly been in use for five days and was being charged with an official cable and power adapter."
