USB3 need at least 9pin and usb 3.0 controller. Not an expert in lightning, but I don't think you can tell the max transfer speed from only the number of pins. Looking online it used to be that only the iPad Pro 12.9 supported USB3 speed, but afaik it has the same lightning connector as everything else.
I would be interested in knowing whether the iPhone 8 will support USB3 transfer speeds with the proper lightning to USB adapter, does anyone know for sure?
the Lightning port is not a USB port. The iPad Pros use the same port and support USB 3.0 speeds. It's not clear at this point whether the iPhone 8/8+ does.USB3 need at least 9pin and usb 3.0 controller.
It's not the same lightning port. The lightning of iPad pro is 16pin (top 8pin and bottom 8pin) but lightning of iPhone only have 8pin at the bottom.the Lightning port is not a USB port. I went to the Apple store and find that iPhone 8 and 8 plus have same 8pin lightning port as iPhone7 ..

ok, everyone said it has usb3.0 no matter what are people here are sayingFast charging requires high current, which you can do with even only big wire and high voltage. Fast data transfer requires voltage variations (representing ones and zeroes) which has a limit for a single wire, so you need multiple wires to reach USB3 data transfer speeds. The iPhone 8 doesn't have enough wires/pins to reach total USB3 data rates, so can't have USB3. The iPhone X may have it, but we don't know yet.
If it does I'll be the first to say "well fokmik, I was wrong!"
