I have a question which is directed to anyone who pre ordered an iPhone 8.
At any time in the pre order process were you given the option to pick up your phone at the Apple Store instead of having it shipped to you at home?

I have gotten conflicting information from Apple Sales reps on the phone and, in person, at the Apple Store. The last rep I spoke with on the phone told me to pick up my online pre order in the Store as a solution to an issue I had.

Yep, it does offer it. I preordered my 8+ on Friday morning and I remember that being an option. It asked for your zip code to search for what's available at your store.

Yes, when you check out the iphone and go to the next process, if the the apple store has it in stock, you have the option to pick it up in that store you go to. If it's unavailable to pick up then that option is grayed out and you can only then have it delivered to you.

I just ordered an 8 plus a minute ago, and it gave me the option to have it shipped or pick up in store.

Thank you. An Apple sales rep suggested that route so I could trade in my iPhone and use the credit for my preorder.

I should have posted this question in an existing thread but didn't think about it till it was too late.

Oh, so that's how it works. Guess, I'll have to see if it's available at the Apple Store and if not I'll have to opt for the shipping option. I see that another poster is picking up their 8+ in the store. Hope it (Apple Store pick up) works out for me.

A little off topic . . . this is why I LOVE macrumors . . . because of helpful people like you, two!

Thanks again ! ! !

Question about this: If I want to trade in my current iPhone, and do a preorder, don't I have to pay-in-full at the time of ordering, even if I opt for store pickup? Wondering how I would go about receiving the credit for my current phone? Would they credit it back to my card when I bring it to the store?

Here is a partial answer to your question. I obtained the information from folks here as well as Apple (phone contact). When you do the pre order you select in store pick up (assuming that the phone is available in the Apple Store close to you). When you pick up your phone in the store, you can trade in your previous phone then. They should make the credit adjustment in the store. The sales rep in the Apple Store, kind of, said as much as well.

Thanks. I actually wandered into an Apple Store shortly after I posted that and asked this question. The answer was a little vague -- the person I talked to said that I would be offered a credit to my card, OR an Apple gift card. I said I would prefer to have it credited back to my card, and she said that it was "up to the person who handles the transaction" as to how it would be refunded. I thought that was a little odd.

I purchased my iPhone 7 this way last fall. I preordered and chose instore pickup. When I went in to the store to pick up I traded in my old iPhone. My credit card was charged for the entire amount of the new phone and then a credit was issued to the card for the amount of the trade in.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I got a vague/wavering answer as well. Sounds like they don't really have a solid policy about trade ins with pre orders. That must be why I got so many different answers from calling Apple (different reps) as well as my excursion to the Apple Store. Seems like no one really knows for sure and they are just making it up as they go. I'm going to try the pre order pick up in the store and take my phone in. If that doesn't pan out well, I'll just sell it through one of the other channels.

Hope that happens in my case. Then I'll just charge it then pay (credit card used) the balance minus the credit.

I had another thought -- after browsing eBay, it seems I can get a heck of a lot more for my old phone by selling it there. Kind of surprised to see what people are willing to pay for a 6 Plus ...

Just looked and I'm surprised as well. But I won't be doing Flea Bay. Almost looks like it's turned into a Scalper's Heaven. Okay, perhaps that was an exaggeration. But, I prefer to skip the Flea Bay headaches (fees to pay, difficult bidders, and on and on). Anyway I'm taking the easy road. But for those brave enough to cross the burning sands . . . okay, just kidding again. Just an individual choice.

I've had pretty good luck. Sold my Mac mini there a few weeks ago and got more than I expected with no hassles. Not to say I've never had problems, but it's been minimal, at least for me. The seller fees are getting a little ridiculous, but if I can get anywhere close to what others have been fetching, I'll still be way ahead of any trade-in offers. On the other hand, if I could be guaranteed that Apple would credit back the trade-in as opposed to offering store credit, I would go that route just for the convenience. Not seeing that guarantee though ...

Yes you have, I stopped selling on eBay many, many years ago. The escalating fees and general hassle kept me away.
Sounds like you will do well selling your phone there. What did you mean by "credit back the trade-in". From what I understand from the Apple Store employee, which may be inaccurate, is that they may be able to return the X, sell it back with the trade in difference. Keep in mind that I believe he may have been making it up as he went along.

I meant having the store issue a credit to my card for the amount of the trade-in, as opposed to handing me store credit. Seems like they're not committing to that, and it would just be at the discretion of whoever handles the transaction. That's a bigger gamble than I'm willing to take ...

Sorry, I wasn't able to delete my unnecessary comment.

What you said makes sense. I would hope that's what they would do, but as you say it's at the discretion of the person you got stuck with . . . or that helpful sales rep who goes out their way to accommodate you. I do understand your point. Having flexible or non existent policies can be a plus or a big zero.
