I ended up digging up an old thread about Bitesms features.
Some of those options listed below might have been added by Apple lately but BiteSms was still way ahead of its time back in 2012.
And many of those useful features are still not available to the stock messages app.
Quick Reply
Whatever you're doing, browsing the web, playing a game or listening to music, with Quick Reply you can quickly reply to incoming text messages without quitting the app you are using.
quick Compose
Whatever you're doing, browsing the web, playing a game or listening to music, with Quick Compose you can easily compose a new text message without quitting the app you are using.
Notification Privacy
Using Notification Privacy you can hide the senders identity or text of an incoming message, so people can't see them at a glance.
Auto-Forward
Easily Auto-Forward received SMS messages to another mobile phone number, or Auto-Forward received iMessages to another Apple device.
Passcode Lock
Protect your privacy from prying eyes using a dedicated passcode in order to get inside the messages app.
Delivery Reports
Ever wanted to check if an SMS you have sent was delivered or not?
Schedules
You can schedule SMS or imessages to be sent at a later date and time, either as a one time, or on repeat intervals, for example a birthday greeting.
Quick Pick Smileys, Templates & Contacts
So easy to insert Smileys, short snippets of text and even contact details from your address book.
Signatures
Personalize your messages, add a signature!
Delay Sending
Ever started to send a message and wished you could cancel it? You can set a delay for 3 or 5 seconds for example and have the ability to hit stop before its send out.
Retry on Failed
When you press "Send" you can now rely on the message actually getting sent, regardless of network state. If the message fails to send because of network issues the program will automatically try to resend it.
Contact Pics
Pictures next to quick reply persons name.Nice!
Quick Forward a Message
Makes it quicker to forward an existing message.
Show all Timestamps. Back in the day Apple only timestamped some messages at random times.
Get more detailed timestamp information about your messages.
Copy to Clipboard
Ever wanted to copy an entire conversation and then for example email a copy of it.
Notification Opt Out/Mute
Allows you to 'opt out' of receiving notification alerts for one or any contacts (so when a message is received no notification vibrate, sound, alert or badge is shown). So you could basically mute text/imessages received by a certain number.
Ideal for opting out of spam or group messages or even keeping a conversation on the 'quiet'. Simply long hold on a conversation (in the conversation list) to toggle notification alerts on or off for that contact. When you have opted out of receiving notifications for a contact it shows as a little bell icon with an X across the bell meaning its in quiet mode.
The messages are still coming in and they are inside the messages app but you dont get the constant ding and pop up notification on the screen.
Perfect for side chicks that you dont want your phone to keep ringing when they text you and you can view their messages and respond to your b-calls at a later time when your main chick is not around
