. I would say it's a first generation iPhone if you ask me.
iPhone Original was a 1st gen for its class [defined the design]
iPhone 4 was a 1st gen for its class [design change]
iPhone 5 was a 1st gen for its class [design change]
iPhone 6 was a 1st gen for its class [design change]
iPhone 7 was sorta a 1st gen for its class [design change on the bottom and back, front a bit the same]
iPhone 8 is like the 2nd gen of its class sorta. [design was same, just with glass back only diff, but still design wise looks the same]
iPhone X was a 1st gen for its class [design change]

sorta can see whats going on around here

I assume the two of you would consider the 5th model of iPod touch to be a 1st generation product, seen as it has a completely new design and screen? I mean look how different it is!

Then why do Apple refer to it as a 5th generation iPod touch?

Wow LOL you’re still at it

The X is a first generation model regardless of if you agree or not.

Get over it.

Ok, fine. The fact that you can’t come back with any worthwhile debate or counterpoint clearly shows you’re just trolling on the subject. I can’t wait to get a first generation iPhone!

Couple of years ago a first generation iphone went for 10k on ebay. Maybe I should grab a dozen of them and so I can get in on the bonanza!!!

So you say it is a matter of opinion, which would mean everyone is right, because opinion has no correct answer.

Then you say you are the only one correct in saying it is first generation.

Get your story straight.

Is this an iPhone? Plain an simple question there, yes. Were there iPhone's prior to this one? Yes. So this is not the 1st Gen iPhone.

Hi!

Thanks for all the great replies (arguing aside). I think that, while the 8 is a lot cheaper, the X will be more future proof for the next 4 years - especially in terms of design. I'm saying that as the 8's design is already 4 years old, meaning it would be an old handset by the time I plan to stop using that. Similar to using an iPhone 3G today...

Thanks for the response!

You do realize the 8/8+/X are all very similar versions of the same phone. The only thing the X really brings is the oled screen and face id. Only modest differences between cameras for all three. Aesthetics primarily. The X and the 8 will in all likelihood have their technical support from apple dropped in exactly the same release of ios. Nothing like using 3G today.

Good luck getting an X though, as supply will be tight and demand will be insane. I'd say pick up the 8 Plus, you'll be happy with it, and it's literally the X minus OLED display and FaceID, so barely any difference in internals, and would last you 4 years just like the X.

Get the 8 Plus, which you can now easily, instead of waiting till January (or worse, beyond January) for an X.

Debate... really?

This is better that your feeble attempt from yesterday.

Well done. You get a gold star next to your name.

There is no story that needs straightening.

Or a debate.

There are however conflicting opinions.

The fact that the X is the first interaction of this form factor is as said... a fact.

It is simple, it is clear and it is obvious.

Cheerio y’all

Sorry for the arguing!

I agree that in terms of design the X is more future proof. As new versions of iOS are released, I’m sure that Apple will make more use of the OLED display (possible dark mode which would look much better on the X vs the 8 plus), new true depth camera features (aka the Face ID camera) and other features. Although in terms of internals ,both phones are pretty much identical, with a slightly better camera. I’d go for the X. Just over a week until pre-orders!

Only 2-3M units shipping on launch day according to Ming-Chi Kuo, good luck getting an X! Just get an 8 Plus right now, or you'll be stuck waiting for an X till next year!

Except at least 2-3 million people will get one on launch day. Why won’t the OP be one of them?

Because OP will be competing for the chance of getting it on Nov 3rd with 40-50 million other people, who also think they can get an iPhone X on Nov 3rd by pre ordering it within the first minute or two.

When you have 40-50M people all pressing the checkout button at the same time as the rest, then obviously your chances of getting one becomes extremely slim.

There won’t be close to 40-50 million people pre-ordering the X. The 6 and 6 plus sold 10 million in the opening weekend. The X isn’t considered to be one of the large upgrade cycles. That’s next years iPhone. Also don’t forget there will be those who purchased the 8/8 Plus instead. I imagine it will be 10–15 million pre-orders.

You're forgetting the 6/6+ was only available for pre order in 10 or 12 countries and launched in those 10 or 12 countries initially. iPhone X, however, is going for pre order and launch in 55 countries initially. So obviously more people will be pre ordering and buying it. Also there was no iUP back in iPhone 6/6+ days, now you have people on the iUP who will be upgrading as well.

Fair point, I forgot about the larger number of countries. Maybe 20-25 million, I still don’t think it’ll be as high as 40-50 million. Let’s hope we all get one!

Except it isn't a matter of opinion. Do you know what a first generation means?

iPhone 4 - a totally different design, a new display, a front facing camera etc etc. Was this a first generation iPhone? No.

iPhone 5 - another new design, a new display, a new port, LTE. Was this a first generation iPhone? No.

iPhone 5s - first iPhone to move to 64-bit, inclusion of a motion coprocessor and Touch ID. Was this a first generation iPhone? No.

iPhone 6/6 Plus - again, a totally revamped design, a new display, NFC. Was this a first generation iPhone? No.

iPhone 6s/6s Plus - a totally new way to interact with your iPhone (3D Touch). Was this a first generation iPhone? No.

iPhone 7/7 Plus - new dual cameras, removal of older features (headphone jack), quad-core SOC. Were these first generation iPhones? No.

iPhone 8/8 Plus - new design (in terms of materials), wireless charging, new display. Are these first generation iPhones? No.

iPhone X - new design, new display (not the first time Apple have used OLED), removal of older features (home button), Face ID, slightly improved camera compared to 8/8 Plus. Everything else the same as the 8/8 Plus. Is this a first generation iPhone? No.

Do ALL of the above products include first generation technology? Yes, they do. This doesn't make the product itself a first generation product. If every new feature meant the product itself was a first generation product, we would never have second generation products!

The iPhone X is the 18th iPhone to be introduced. It is not a first generation product. It is a refined and proven product that includes 1st generation technology.

Trying to claim the iPhone X is a first generation product to discourage the OP from purchasing the X is spouting rubbish. If you were to state price as being a reason or something else, then fine. But not being a first generation product!

iPhone 4 - Antennagate

iPhone 4s - Same basis design as the 4, Antennagate fix with dual antennas

iPhone 5 - Same basis design as the 4 , just longer with the bad parts fixed

iPhone 5s - Same basis design as the 4 , just longer with the bad parts fixed

iPhone 6/6 Plus - Bendgate, Touch Disease

iPhone 6s/6s Plus - Same basis design as the 6 , structural improved to fix bendgate and Touch Disease .

iPhone 7/7 Plus - Same basis design as the 6,just with the bad parts fixed .

iPhone 8/8/X Plus - New design?, flaws unknown (batterygate?)

Haha, what are you guys even arguing about? Seems pointless.

Anyway, yeah I've read it'll be difficult to get hold of it! Ill set a pre-order and if I get something crazy (such as December), I'll just buy myself an 8 as it is still an exceptional device. And I'll be saving myself a small fortune. The Plus is just far too large for me unfortunatley!

If the iPhone 8 isn't selling well, as reports suggest, is it likely that Apple will drop the price?

Is it likely Trump is resign, apologize, give away his wealth to the poor, renounce his citizenship and join a monastery?
