For the wireless charging, does it have to have direct contact with the charger? I am planning to use the LifeProof Fre case. It does have a small opening in the back but that is it

Not sure unless lifeproof says it will. That's why I bought cases that said it would.

I'm using an Otto Box clear case and tried my 8 Plus on a Samsung charger in the Sprint store today and it would not work. Tech there said it will work with very thin cases

Will definitely vary depending on the case and the charger.

iPhone case and one like a seidio should be fine. The thicker the case you can run into issues.

It depends on the thickness and material of the case. Remember, the farther away from the charger, the less effective it is.

I can wirelessly charge with an Apple Silicone and Apple Leather case. I don’t see why it wouldn’t allow wireless charging, or would prevent it from working; plastic is thin.

Depends on the charger. I've had phone a that work with the Otterbox defender. Just depends.
