I’m at an upgrade crossroads ...

Should I get an iPhone 8 Plus or XS Max?

The former has a screen-ratio that I prefer, and which seems compatible with every game under the sun.

The latter is newer, but has that weird ratio and thus half the games I own will have black bars and other issues.

I understand they both have the same processor.

However, some games have higher frame-rate on the XS, such as Asphalt 9, and others slightly better graphical features, such as Grid. I expect this trend will continue. I don’t know why if they have the same spec — perhaps a marketing thing?

One option I am thinking about was getting the iPhone 8 Plus in the short term and jumping onto the iPhone 11 or whatever comes along later in the year (who knows, maybe they’ll revert to the old screen ratio for that).

Any thoughts?

(Gaming is the number one factor: I don’t care much for facial recognition or cameras.)

I think the 8+ is an excellent way to go. Definitely think about getting one if you want to see what's available later this year or next. I have the XS Max and the 8+ and I like them both, but I value the 8+ for its battery life, home button, screen and overall proven robust execution.

The 8+ is an especially reasonable choice if camera tech isn't that critical to you.

Facial recognition, as it turned out for me, is a non-issue. Before I got used to the XS Max I was skeptical about it being as instinctive and fail-safe as the physical home button on the 8+. But honestly, facial recognition has worked brilliantly from the start and provides access to the phone as easily and as quickly as the home button.

And don't forget to consider that the 8+ is a better value proposition, considering your preferences.

Few things:

1.) The iPhone 8 and the XS Max do not share the same processor, the iPhone XS Max has the A12 processor, where as the iPhone 8 use the A11.

2.) You mentioned gaming is the ‘number one factor’, then your obvious choice would be the A12 processor in the Max, reason being, it supports 60 frames per second for gaming. That alone is a _major_ differential for stability/fluidity for those who actually do play games on their phones.

I agree with this. Also all of the apps will get resized based on the screen size. Most famous games are all updated to support the Xs max screen
