Best results are holding the tag against ( touching) the top center edge of the back of the phone (kinda next to the camera) For phones with a notch, hold it against the back, right behind the notch.

Thanks. That is exactly what I am doing. Meanwhile my wife's XS can read the AirTag but not the iPhone 8 Plus
