For the past five years, Apple's September iPhone-centric events have followed the same general formula. An event during the first week or two of the month, pre-orders shortly after, and then an official launch date approximately 10 days later. Apple's September schedule for 2012 to 2016 is below:

- iPhone 5 (2012) - Sept. 12 event, Sept.14 pre-orders, Sept. 21 launch.

- iPhone 5s (2013) - Sept. 10 event, no pre-orders, Sept. 10 launch.

- iPhone 6/6 Plus (2014) - Sept. 9 event, Sept. 12 pre-orders, Sept. 19 launch.

- iPhone 6s/6s Plus (2015) - Sept. 9 event, Sept. 12 pre-orders, Sept. 25 launch.

- iPhone 7/7 Plus (2016) - Sept. 7 event, Sept. 9 pre-orders, Sept. 16 launch.

If Apple plans to follow this same formula -- and it looks like that's what's happening -- pre-orders for the new "iPhone 8" and its companion devices the iPhone 7s and the iPhone 7s Plus will take place on Friday, September 15 at 12:00 a.m. Pacific Time.

Following pre-orders, the new devices will most likely see an official launch on Friday, September 22, with pre-order shipments going out to customers and in-store stock available.

Friday, September 15 is a highly logical guess as to when we're going to see pre-orders, and unsurprisingly, that's the date being cited today by German site Macerkopf. According to the site, German carriers are preparing for a September 15 pre-order date and a September 22 launch date.

While Apple tends to follow a specific September formula, there have been deviations. In 2013, for example, Apple did not accept pre-orders for the iPhone 5s due to supply constraints, and in 2015, pre-orders took place early on a Saturday morning. Still, September 15 and September 22 are the most likely dates for pre-orders and launch, respectively.

Apple will unveil the new iPhone 8 at an event set to be held on Tuesday, September 12 at 10:00 a.m. PT at its Apple Park campus. An iPhone 7s, 7s Plus, LTE Apple Watch, and 4K Apple TV will also make an appearance at the event.

For details on the new iPhone 8, which will feature a glass body, edge-to-edge display, facial recognition, and more, make sure to check out our full iPhone 8 roundup.

I'm going to enjoy seeing people staying awake until 5 AM to preorder their new iPhone, as well as people setting up a tent in their local Apple Store a week before launch just to get it first.

what does it mean to our upgrade plan back in the uk would we be able to get the 8 or have to wait

If this is right, that means those of us on the East coast need to be up and ready to go with the Apple store app at 3am :). Guess I will either not go to bed at all, or try to go to bed at 9pm.

I wonder if the expected scarcity of the OLED iPhone will bring us back to the looooong launch line-ups of a few years ago to snag, or perhaps scalp one or two of these supposedly hot new phones?

Or perhaps a return to the lucrative 'simply keeping a spot in the line-up' for a well-heeled prospective 'must-have-it-now-at-all-cost' buyer.

Back in bed @ 3:02? Come on...more like 3:07. Store always gets bogged down when the gates open. :)

Lol! Seriously, it was that smooth! Last year I didn't even suffer any lag in the App. Loaded up right at 3, confirmation email was for 3:01.

Though to be fair, my iPhone 6 preordering experience was a bit more... irritating through Sprint :D

Let’s hope that at 0800 (the time I usually leave.. or until half 8) that it all goes smoothly on my iPhone and or Mac.

I’ve set up the primary quick purchase thing.

Last year pre-ordering was horrible for my jet black.

Last year was a disaster. Many had to write the executive assistance team to get things straightened out if you were on the upgrade program.

Hope this year is programmed better. Also wish you could do it without going to a store after this many years!

I wonder what happens with IUP. Because the 13th payment comes out on 9/16 for those that got launch day devices. I don't remember the outcome of the fiasco last year.

Buy the phone outright (like me) and there won't be a problem. ;)

Gonna be a long day Friday if I'm getting up in the middle of the night for this. Worth it ;)
We need a special stay-up all night to purchase MR thread for the event.

If supply is as low as they say it is for the OLED version, I wouldn’t be surprised one bit if they did a separate preorder date in October.

iPhone 6 launch was a nightmare. All 3 iPhones launched at once would be the equivalent of a server train wreck.

(Side note: First event for Steve Jobs Theater, wonder if the live stream will hold)

At these prices - approx £1000 I'm not letting the apple hype get to me these days. I tend to buy sim free and have a separate sim only contract £12 a month.
Really looking forward to watching the live event on Tuesday.
Will hold out at least 2 months and let the dust settle this time.

Well, that's the way I did it back when AT&T was subsidizing my phonez…i was just wondering if things were any different now that many of us are on the Apple Forever Lease program :p
