I thought the reason Apple got rid of glass on the rear was because too many people were breaking them, now they've brought glass back? I wish they'd make up their mind. Why don't they go back to a curved back too, at least that was more comfortable to hold. Or a straight edge again. All this back and forth is ridiculous, pick a design and improve it with each new release.

I'm not sure if you're aware of this or not, but part of the reason for the glass backing, is for wireless charging capabilities. Being that other smart phone manufacturers offer this, this likely was a necessary step for Apple in that direction to offer the freedom of wires, now that so we can charge your Apple Watch, iPhone and AirPods on the same charging mat.

Hey Relentless, do you know if cases like Otterbox or whatever interferes with charging?

I think it's going to depend on the type Of case if it will affect the wireless charging or not. If it's a thicker case like OtterBox or Defender, it might interfere with it, because Those cases has almost 3 layers of protection. I would imagine Apple tested some of their own OEM cases, which if they're not too thick, I would imagine they would work normally without interfering with the charging. But I think we will see a lot of hands-on tests once the AirPower is closer to launch.

Hmm. We'll definitely have to see once airpower comes out. I would love to see ifixit do some internal exploring....might give us some better understanding of the charging.

I get that, but they didn't have to use glass and could have gone back to a plastic rear. Nothing ruins your day more than dropping your iPhone and have the front and back crack. But then again, Apple knows this.

The glass back looks much better than plastic does for a high end phone.

The part that I dont like its if you break the back glass then you need to pay the replacement fee of $350-400 for the new iphone.
Before with the iphone 4/4S if the back glass cracked it was an easy $40 back plate replacement fee.
Phones get dropped all the time and I know the front screen is fragile but to cost that much for breaking the back and a front screen is less than half of that. Doesnt make much sense.

Even with apple care plus???

This is a non issue....I rock either a clear case to see the beauty of the back or use the Apple leather case which feels and looks amazing.

Now people who want to rock there phone naked are obviously going to run into some problems...

Fashion always repeats itself.

I'd recommend not doing this. You'll find that most high tech equipment works better when it hasn't been dropped.

What about just taking care of your device ? The iPhone 8 is an electronic device, it’s not supposed to be dropped multiple times so obviously Apple won’t design their phone so that it’s primary function is to cover your mistakes of dropping it.

If this is what you are looking for buy something like a Galaxy S7 Active or just put a bulky case on your iPhone and that’s it, problem solved.
