I was going to hard restart my dads Iphone 8+ but it will not do it! Yes I know the steps: Up volume/Down volume/ then hold the side button till the Apple logo comes up! I have tried that MANY times and all that shows is the power off slide and I continue to hold, then it just goes back to the home screen!!

Um.... just hold the vol down and power for 10 seconds. Vol up is not involved.
Ummm... thats for 7. OP is correct re: both volume buttons and power button.

Have had trouble doing the combo correctly myself. And seen Geniuses struggle as well.

ADD: just gave it a try. Couple of attempts before also went to the power off slide, but kept holding and it did go to Apple logo.

You are doing it correctly - do all the buttons function properly each on their own?

May I ask why you are trying to hard reset? It should be a very last troubleshooting step as both shutdown and power-on sequences are important for the operating system and the device hardware.

Yes all the buttons work fine!! I usually do a hard reset once a month or when something is flakey---always do one once a month to clear the phone!

I would recommend performing a normal shutdown instead of the force restart for reasons as I stated above. You are doing more harm than good when performing a force restart. If you find things becoming "flakey" Although time consuming, I would recommend backing up and restoring the device using iTunes, this will eliminate any software bugs/ corruption in a safer manner.
