I know everyone's talking about the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro/Max at the moment, but I'm looking to pick up an iPhone 8 non-Plus because of its smaller form factor and recent price drop. I'm coming from the XS Max after using it for a year and while I enjoy the huge screen and battery life (2 days for my usage), I got really tired of the huge size.

Is anyone else also picking up an iPhone 8 either new or used? The only thing that's stopping me from buying it right now is its 2gb RAM and I'm wondering if I can get at least 2 years out of it, taking into consideration OS updates and all.

You should be fine. I use one for work and it runs great!

I have an 8 which I’m just handing down using 11 Pro to replace it. Very similar size mainly longer screen due to the notch. Both 256GB. So far battery looks similar life too. Like the 8 seen no need to upgrade until now as I do lots outdoor photography so wide camera important to me.

Been using an iPhone 8 for almost 2 years and 2gb's has never been a problem. I expect it will be sufficient for at least 2 more years.

ETA: if rumors are true and early 2020 does in fact get another iPhone based on the iPhone 8, perhaps there will be some upgrades such as more ram. Just food for thought if you can hold off.

It's a great phone, and will be for a while. If you like that form factor, go for it. There's great deals now.

I’ve used my 8 plus for 2 years now and truly feel it’s the best iPhone I’ve ever had...and I’ve had them all since launch. Dark mode in iOS 13 adds a whole new dimension to it. Why then am I lusting over the 11 pro max /sigh

8 is a great phone. I have one as a spare and it performs just like a more recent device. You’d have no problem using this for two years. Also, the 8 has almost no reported issues. Very well built device.

In the last several years Apple has been making a better product.

Sitting right next to me is an active iPhone 6s+ that I got on launch weekend. It's never had an issue and has been rock solid for four years.

If my 6s+ can last four years without an issue and show no sign of quitting then your iPhone 8, which is a couple of years newer than my 6s+, will last at least as long - which is two years more than you're asking of it.

Enjoy your 8.

Traded my 8 in yesterday for an 11 Pro. Nothing wrong with the phone, it has served me well over the last two years (it was a launch day 8), and it was in immaculate condition (the Apple genius was shocked at how pristine it looked). Personally I just wanted to try the new tech, as I’d never used FaceID before.

Let us know how you like it...I’m getting tired of vacillating lol.

I am currently using a 5S which still works but is now unsupported by iOS13. I am considering getting an iPhone 8 this week to replace it. I love the small size of my 5S which fits in all pockets. The 8 seems like the smallest logical upgrade. Now I am wondering if I should wait for the updated 8 in spring 2010. Is it crazy to hold out?

My wife is trading her 8 for an 11 Pro. They're close enough that she considers them the same size. "Similar" might be more accurate. I went from a 7 to an XS (non-Max) and that was more noticeable, mostly due to the weight difference.

Thank you all for the replies, love this forum!

s54, if it helps, at the very least you’ll get a lot more mileage in terms of OS upgrades. I’m getting an 8 hoping it’ll last 2 years. If you hold on to your 11 pro, it’ll definitely go beyond that. The 6s with 2gb RAM is still getting iOS 13, which is 4 years ago.

For me, iOS updates are important not because of any new features, but for security fixes at the OS level as well as for apps. Devs are going to drop support for past versions of iOS eventually.

Is it crazy to hold out?
People around here keep asking this and I really don't get it. What anyone thinks about the state of a person's mental health is irrelevant. It's their money, they should do and get what they want or not.

I would say that allowing others a vote in the choice is the actual crazy part. I make my own decisions and don't worry about whether someone thinks I'm crazy or not. I wouldn't own a damn thing if I did.

I'm using an 8+ right now. I just purchased mine last year because I didn't like the look of the X. I'm happy with my 8+; I have the 256GB version. I might upgrade next year but it would probably be the 11 pro if my carrier still has discounts then. It takes great pictures, even though I have small hands it fits pretty good in my hands. I don't plan on upgrading for a while.

I went from an SE -> 10R. For the most part, it's been fine but looking to downgrade back to an SE or 8 then upgrade next year.

Given that 2GB is the minimum requirement for iOS 13, I would seriously consider buying the XR instead. Two years down the road, 2GB will be tiny regardless of how optimized iOS 15 might be.

Dunno - I'm dying to upgrade my 5S - it's terribly slow, desperately needs more storage (hello 16 gb), and battery life sucks. I'll probably go for the 11 pro mostly because it's a little smaller than the 11 but the price makes me cranky, especially as there is no 128 gb option. It's not a terrible idea to get an 8 for cheaper, I just prefer to buy new and keep forever - I like having the brand new phone every once in awhile...

Highly recommend buying it refurbished directly from Apple. I bought a 64gb which Apple price corrected down to $379, which is a steal.

After the latest announcement and comparing it to the 128gb 6s I was upgrading from, I decided to return it for an 11 despite the larger dimensions/size. After promotional discounts and an hand me down iPhone 7 trade-in, I was able to get it for not much more money with double the storage, added features. I did have a slight preference for the 11 Pro for the size alone though couldn't justify the added premium.

Food for thought

FYI: 8 PLUS doesn’t have band 71 if your a t-mobile customer. Otherwise I would have kept mine.
great phone...
