Would you actually wear the iPhone while skiing or snowboarding? I'd at least want a very well-padded case for it in case of encounters with the ground, other skiers, yettis, etc.

Yes, I would.... but I would NOT be using the map while "on the mountain" That sounds like a recipe for a broken collarbone.
