Why does Apple measure battery life on video playback. I mean that’s not what people are sitting around doing most of the time and I guarantee you they have cellular off and brightness at a minimum.

There is no way this phones battery lasts more than 6-7 hours with moderate use.
Because Video streaming is the most strenuous activity on the phone. It's using constant activity.

What struck me as the biggest compromise with the Air is the camera system. It's basically a bit better than the 16e but far less useful than the 17. I found that a bit disappointing. You're paying a lot more money for a svelte phone. But that's about all you get for your money.
Yes, you are giving up the different zoom abilities, along with spatial and cinematic shooting modes.

Not at minimal brightness and everything else turned off. Cellular activity is one of the biggest drainers by far.

i mean it’s the worst in the 17 lineup, but supposedly has the same video playback hours as the 16 pro, and four hours more than the 14 and 15 pro. that’s not exactly bad battery life!
Exactly! It will have excellent battery life, all things considered. It’s just that the last generation of iPhones received a fairly major battery capacity upgrade, and the 17 Pro models are receiving yet another bump.

Battery life is still going to be very good in the Air.

Interestingly, the new 17 Pro (6.3” model) has nearly the same battery capacity as my current 14 Pro Max, which I always thought had excellent battery life! The 17 Pro, with its smaller screen and more efficient chip, should get even better battery life!!

Not really. They can keep a single GPU core active for the playback and idle everything else, and the screen (which is among the biggest power draws) can be run at whatever the frame rate of the video is (probably not 120hz, and also probably not full brightness either). Streaming compression and WiFi chips are also very optimized these days, so even downloading the video isn’t going to be a huge power draw.

The most strenuous would be a 3D game, but that isn’t a practical example for most people. I am going to wait to see what reviews say once the phone is out, but the fact that they made a big deal about the MagSafe battery back doesn’t fill me with hope.

I rarely have airplane mode disabled (at any given time) I am able to make and receive phone calls as well text via SMS perfectly fine and have been since Wi-Fi calling was enabled over 10 years ago

As long as I am connected to Wi-Fi, my phone is in airplane mode 100% of the time and having airplane mode disabled would make zero difference (other than draining the battery)

Do this and you will be greatly surprised by how much longer your battery will last! Disable airplane mode when you’re out and about (without access to Wi-Fi)

Same. I set an automation to automatically enable airplane mode when it connects to a wifi and disabled if when I am not longer connected to a wifi.

Nowhere near the most strenuous. But it’s a consistent activity, that doesn’t rely on outside factors. For instance, power consumption of cellular activity relies heavily on reception quality. Video playback is an unrealistic, but comparable spec.

They do specify streamed video too, but that is via WiFi as far as I can tell.

This means that the benefits of the new cellular chip isn’t actually reflected in the specifications.

I hope you are using a vetted VPN service when connected to public Wifi. If not, you are taking a big gamble with your security and privacy.

On paper, the battery life seems to be ok. But not sure whether it will last that long in the real word. Waiting to see the reviews.

Have you enabled airplane mode and since enabled wifi and mobile data? Can you look? Airplane mode without data will only recognise GPS, afaik...

Be good to clarify.

This is the phone I'll get probably IF the camera is decent. I hate hate hate the look of the new pros but love the camera features in the pro models.

I'm not on my phone a lot so battery life isn't a big concern to me.

The sales for this are going to be fascinating.

For just $100 more you can get a 17 pro:

A slightly smaller screen, heavier and thicker but way better battery life and two more cameras, one with a far superior zoom. And better speakers.

And beneath it, the regular iPhone is now no slouch with that slightly smaller screen, heavier (but not as much as the pro) and thicker, promotion and an extra widescreen camera, as always. And better speakers!

I've said this before, but like the iPhone X before it, this is one for those who want to experience the future of the iPhone, right now.

Come back to this post a year from now after iOS updates + bugs and unoptimized app updates from the app store. Same cycle each generation. The bloat and degradation hits and you're back to living on the charger before the day is over.
Except that I never ever have with any iPhone, ever. But yeah, I get the point. Some days I put it on the charger and it’s hanging near 10%, which feels a bit lite…

At over 160 grams, the Air might be thin, but definitely not light!
I was expecting something revolutionary, like when the MBA got introduced.

whether anyone sees it now or not, iPhone Air was released at a strategically genius time. sounds like it'll be getting around the same battery life as anything from the 12-14 era—the time when casual users started seeing diminishing returns on battery life, as it would simply last all day for them. there are absolutely pro users who still benefit from the battery life improvements in the latest Pro models, however, it seems like Apple wants to yet again start a new era of iPhone with this product in particular. (notice how it's iPhone Air, not iPhone 17 Air?) between the surprisingly capable battery, the wildly capable single-lens camera, and how straight-up beautiful of a phone it is, I'm very interested to see how this release plays out for Apple. wouldn't be too shocked if it goes the same long-term direction as the MacBook it's named after.

Let's see what difference the N1 and C1X makes to battery life - this is going to be one where reputable battery test reviews are key.

I'd be coming from the iPhone SE 3rd gen, and that sounds like double the battery performance, so it'll be an upgrade for me. Now, I'll probably hate the phone because it's so big, and return it and go back to my SE. Which is what I've done with the last 3 or 4 phones I've bought. But I'm hoping because it's thin and light, that I will be able to overlook that it's giant. I want to like it.

Also missing on the Air is the lidar. So the Air has 2 cameras less, no lidar, USB2 and titanium frame but it costs slightly less than Pro, so to my math this is the new flagship.

Can you imagine an iPhone Air mini? 🤤
As cool as that would be I can't lol. I don't think they could get enough battery life out of an iPhone that is Air and Mini. A Mini would likely need to get some battery size back with thickness since it doesn't have the length/width. (I would be fine with that by the way, just give me any Mini.)

They didn't include that technology in the other models. Why.
Because they want to make the worst phones they can get away with for the most money.
You expect a company to include all possible tech in all models without raising any prices?
