My phone was plugged in using USB cord. We smelled and then saw a stream of smoke and that the USB and phone were melting. Explanations??? What you can't see in the picture is that the end of the phone is melted too. I'm scared to plug it in any charger. And it is the charger that came with it, bought in May 09.

Plugged into what? Looks like your battery malfunctioned and drew too much power to charge. Take it to apple, even if it's out of warranty, that should never happen.

    Same here...

I actually had to register and let you know that my Iphone cord also caught on fire last night, in the same exact spot. Melted the connection end and a small area on my phone. And if you Google "IPhone Cord Fire" you'll find several pictures of other people who had the same thing happen. Doesn't it seems like this should be looked at by Appple?

I had to get a new phone and new connection cables. The Apple Tech who helped me said he's heard of this happening before...great!! Now I don't dare to plug it in!

Take it in to an apple store and ask for an exchange in or out of warrenty it'll be replaced. If they refuse call apple care. Apple don't wan stuff like this in the national press.

just had a thread like this the other day. turned out the iphone water sensor was triggered and most likely it caused the short so check your water sensors. one inside the headphone the other on the bottom if you can check it. and take it back to Apple after burning a hole in your jeans and burning your leg. :p

hmm, next time try charging it with ur comp, because if a computer detects too much energy being drained out of the usb port, it disables it until u unplug it.

Wow, that sucks. Something similar happened to my Powerbook G4. The power cord where it entered the laptop got hot and melted rubber had dripped and pooled under the connector. Luckily I found it before it caught on fire (I could smell it from the other room). I replaced the power adapter and it was fine. Apparently the cord had shorted out from wear.
