I’ve been connecting my iPhone to my 2013 Toyota Highlander via USB for a long time now. My latest iPhone is an XR. Usually as soon as I connect it, my phone normally takes over my radio, and starts playing music from the phone. I select source and then “Sat”, if I want to listen to SiriusXM. I normally have to do this twice before the phone figures out that I don’t want to listen to my phone music.

However, today while driving, the phone continued over and over taking over the radio. I could not get it to stop doing this. I was also using the phone to navigate, so I wanted it plugged in. I did notice, if I unplugged the USB cable from the car’s USB port, the problem went away. If I just turned off Blue tooth, this did not solve the issue.

What has changed? Any ideas how to keep the phone powered, but not interfering with the Radio?

Did you recently update iOS on your Xr? Did you recently update the firmware on your Toyota?

Here's what I would do. Use a USB cigarette charger and plug your iPhone to that for charging. Sounds like your connecting your Xr via Bluetooth anyway, so why do you need two connections between the Xr and the radio?

I do this on my Honda, but not because of any issues. If I have my iPhone plugged into the radio's USB, I have one more input to cycle through when I want to switch from FM to iPhone. Yes, I'm that lazy.
