iPhone Apps on the iPad... when they finally release the "HD" version of the same app

This question applies really only to the "free" apps. I think I know the answer, but I thought I'd ask anyway.

I use some free apps like FourSquare or TripIt on both my iPhone and iPad. They only have iPhone versions, so on the iPad, they're scaled down to iPhone size.

When/if they release an iPad version of the free app, will App Updates find it or will I have to keep checking the App Store for a new version?

(My hunch is that they're viewed as totally separate, so I have to keep checking, but just asking to be sure)

You have to keep checking unless they make a universal application.
