I don't think screen-burnouts are an issue on modern LED screens. I leave my MacBook Pro on all night sometimes as a nightlight, and for clock and for Facebook ;)

Nothing will happen. The iPhone's screen has an LED backlight. If it's a regular LED light, well those last about 50,000 hours. If you leave the iPhone pretty much on all the time at night.. I guess uh 8 hours? The backlight will last 8.5 years LOL.

I'm guessing something else will fail before the backlight burns out.

Sir I believe to minimize intrusiveness, you should mount an iPad to your ceiling with a bluetooth remote control in order to set your alarms and whatnot THAT WAY you don't even have to turn your head! If you sleep on your side then you should get TWO iPhones and put them on both sides of the bed!

Now I know this is all 'alien' to you, but you really need to stop being obtuse

You are right, I am being silly. I should sleep the way you sleep since it is so obviously a better way. And I should disregard any kind of gadget since they don't serve a real important purpose in my life.

Thanks for the insight.

Yes you should sleep the way I sleep, with 2 eyes closed and going to sleep. That's how everyone sleeps isn't it?

Im not saying that you should disregard any gadget.
I AM saying that its kind of silly to use an iphone as a clock. Especially when their are other perfect other options to do so which are even better.... I mean honestly its going to be a pain trying to read a time off that tiny 3.5 inch screen when its dimly lit, especially as the sun starts to shine in the morning. And honestly I think your 'iphone night clock' is just one of those toys kids really want but after a month they dont really care about it.

Dang I just bought one of these Apps today and after reading this I'm feeling obtuse...

Lol

You're damn right! What need do you have when you sleep? Come on, you just got busted. Suits you well. You'd better spend your time sleeping instead of buying apps you so obviously don't need.

Duly noted sir, I will try that as soon as tonight. will keep you posted.

Duly noted too, I'm uninstalling the app right now.

Now, let's put the sarcasm aside. When you try some new food, your parents should have taught that you don't say "it's bad" but "I don't like it". There's a whole lot of a difference between both, and you apparently still need to learn it.

But I'm not here to educate 12 year olds, I'm sorry. You'll have to do it by yourself.

So go to wikipedia, learn the definition of "Empathy" (funny thing, really), live a little (say, a few years, until you're out of your teens), realize that the world does not revolve around you (not as easy as it sounds), note that often, listening is way more important than speaking (note again that for this to happen, you need to start listening to see how it feels. Kind of a catch 22 if you ask me), and finally, realize that without all this knowledge most of what you say will make you look like an arrogant jackass and a spoiled brat.

Good luck on this journey, it is an interesting one although not an easy one by any measure.

I was just debating this myself. I hesitated about the burn-in of the screen and the burn-out of the backlight, even knowing the MTBF suggested it wasn't an issue. In the end, I just dug my old alarm clock out of a drawer. It has a nice big snooze button I can smack, as opposed to raising my head, swiping and finding the proper spot on the LCD to press. I'll admit, I liked the idea of using the iPhone to wake to music and show weather etc. But it does so much else for me, I can let the alarm clock capability slide.

LOL man its funny to see how I am a 16 year old teen and your probably a 25+ year old adult who is getting mad over such a little argument. If the world doesn't revolve around me why do you care so much about my opinion?

Sir, I think you will need good luck on your journey if you think using a clock app is 'easier'.

Please tell me what is so easy about looking over picking up your phone looking at the time and setting it back down other than looking over at a NICE EASY TO READ traditional alarm clock?

Just because you CAN do something doesn't mean you HAVE to..think about that.. let it soak in..then reply.

If you are still not convinced that it's easier please read what the friendly poster above said:

You fail to understand feelings in others - as was clearly evident before, so it is not a surprise. I am not mad by any standard of the word mad. I am merely trying to make you think - which proves to be as hard as I thought.
If the world doesn't revolve around me why do you care so much about my opinion?
I couldn't care less about your opinion. However, I do care about you. Not that I care about you in particular, but I care about others in general. You should have read what "Empathy" meant before replying, it would have avoided this question.

Now, it is usually nice to have people caring about you, but why do you think that would make the universe revolve around you? I have to admit that the wording of your question baffles me, as it is that close to you admitting you believe to be the center of said universe. Usually, even people that believe so don't express it that way...
Sir, I think you will need good luck on your journey if you think using a clock app is 'easier'.
So you confirm that since you find something hard, it must be hard for everyone else, hence confirming you firmly believe to be the center of the universe. Good job.

Reading the time on a phone who stands and whose screen is on is no more difficult than reading the time on any other device, unless I missed something. What you missed however is that this thread is about people letting their phone screen on all the time at night. Of course, if they hide their phone under their bed, there is no point at all, so the assumption that the phone is not flat on a bedside table seems obvious, even though it wasn't mentioned explicitly. Point granted to you.

That said, a traditional alarm clock usually fails if there is an electricity shortage, unless you care enough to change the batteries. As a result, it won't wake you up, because when the electricity is back you usually get a blinking 00:00 and nothing else.

So either you have to feed the beast with batteries every year or risk not being woken up. I'd say the "easier" point goes to the iPhone on this one.
Just because you CAN do something doesn't mean you HAVE to..think about that.. let it soak in..then reply.
Please point out where I mentioned that I felt I HAD to do this? I can, and so I want to do it. I am actually doing it.

You should read more carefully. But this would mean you care about what others have to say which is obviously moot since you think that everyone that doesn't agree with you is wrong.

If you are still not convinced that it's easier please read what the friendly poster above said:

The fact that you found another poster that think like you don't make your thought universally right either. Again, different people have different needs, tastes, customs... well, in short there are people not thinking like you, and they are no more right or wrong than you are.

To conclude, I have nothing to add to the advices I wrote in my previous post, and if anything, your answer just reinforce the fact that you should follow them.

Sir if you are not mad please tell me why you resorted to vulgar language to make your point across. i am pretty sure you are heated over a little argument on the net. Most people use this kind of language in frustration/anger and unless you CASUALLY like to use words like jackass and arrogant bastard when your calm.. which i high doubt, then you are mod.

I will now be the mature one here and end this argument.

Please keep this in note: "Do not live your life to convince others, for only God knows your heart."

Do not live your life to convince others

But... isn't that what you've been trying to do from the very first post you wrote answering me? Your whole posting was there to convince me I didn't need my iPhone as an alarm clock...

Funny how in the same post you contradict yourself again: You plan on being the mature one, and then you write a "wise" sentence, which is the exact opposite of your behavior. You apparently live by the motto "do what I say, don't do what I do".

This little sentence is indeed very true. If only you'd have understood it before posting, we wouldn't be there arguing.
