If you buy the sim free version of the the future iPhone XI, you wouldn't have to pay the $30 AT&T upgrade fee right? Could the sim from my old iPhone work with the new one? Or I could easily get a new sim for free from AT&T right?

AT&T SIM cards used to be free but now they charge $5 (According to the employee at the AT&T store; yesterday).

Sorry can't address the rest of your post concerning XI.

Correct. If you purchase an iPhone outright and use your current sim you do not have to pay an activation fee.

Kinda funny that when you upgrade your phone, and pay for it in interest free monthly installments, there is a $30 activation fee. They're gonna make you pay somewhere, somehow. :(

I’ve never paid any upgrade fees with att. I just chat them up and get it removed. Works everytime for me.
