One caveat:

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned, but one VERY annoying feature of Pick Your Plan is it's balance-notification messages that are sent after every call and message.

I've considered this a big drawback. Apparently there is no way to have it removed. A Google search will find you customers with the same feelings.

I wonder if they've decided to do away with this feature now that they seem to have created this new method of sign-up and so forth with the iPhone.

I have one and that is a complete pain in the neck. I wouldn't be surprised to find that disabled (or a work-around) on the iPhone by aapl since would reflect negatively on iPhone--people nearby unaware of that problem might think it's associated with iPhone, not prepaid service.

One question on this topic. Being a student I have poor credit and want to do the off contract. I just want to make sure that there is not a deposite with this way of buying the plan.

Then why the hell call it "prepaid"? Doesn't that mean you pay $30 for 200 minutes, and that lasts for the life of that 200 minutes? If you don't use it, then you'll never have to pay another $30, since you still have that 200 minutes you pre-paid for, right?

This type of plan is more like a normal plan but it is secured by a credit/debit card or bank account so you can't default on payments or get charged overages. It's specifically designed for people whose credit prohibits them from getting a "real" phone.

My credit reports are locked down, my choice to prevent identity theft so even though I have a 812 credit rating, I couldn't initially activate the phone because ATT was not allowed to access my info. Then, I dug into the 'pay as you go' concept and though that would be the best way to go.

Yes, I was able to port over my Verizon #. Took about 26 hours for that.

Now I just have a voicemail problem. ATT will take care of that tomorrow.

Yepp, the annoying notification thingy has been bugging me all day. I'm going to call ATT tomorrow and see if they can turn the friggin thing off!

Cheers.

I called Go Phone support today and they told me that the only way to avoid this is by going post-paid!!! Since i have push email enabled through Yahoo, my phone repeatedly accesses EDGE (instead of WiFi which i have always on, i wonder why) and therefore when i wake up in the morning, i have to literally click the dismiss message 15-20 times before i can unlock the screen!

Anyone know how i can make Yahoo push email access my WiFi network instead of Edge?

Cheers.

A comment on TUAW.com:

AT&T Appears to have fixed the Unlimited Data Plan GoPhone issues were it messaged you constantly. I spent over 4 hours yesterday on the phone with AT&T.

Question: Why can't you turn it off.
Answer: We do not have control of it. It is a built in feature. We are aware that this has become a issue and are working towards resolving this in the next 24 - 72 hours.

If anyone else can confirm this that would be great!

This is VERY important for anyone on the prepaid plan. This is not stated anywhere that I can find but discovered it today and confirmed by AT&T and Apple. The iPhone data plan on prepaid does NOT include the 200 text messages. You have to pay an extra $4.99/month if you want these or 15 cents each! No where do I remember that being stated in the agreement during the iPhone activation in iTunes. In fact, all I remember is that it was presented as regardless of your voice plan, the $20 data plan for EDGE, Visual VM, and 200 text messages was standard for any iPhone activation - please be aware this again is NOT the case for prepaid. AT&T sticks it to you with less any time minutes, less N&W minutes, and no mobile to mobile when you get the equivalent prepaid voice package and then sticks it to you again when it comes to the data plan. When calling about this discrepancy, AT&T was very hostile and rude saying that the iPhone should have never been allowed to be activated with a prepaid plan (funny considering it's a built in option in the iTunes activation) while Apple apologized profusely for any confusion and offered to escalate the complaint about the misleading nature of the activation process after checking and double checking if this was indeed correct.

Now, as for the annoying "nag message" as I like to call it... in a conference call with Apple and AT&T tech support yesterday, both sides stated they were aware of what an annoyance this message was and conceeded it was the #1 complaint of prepaid subscribers and that they were actively working on a solution that would be released soon. Of course with the slew of weasle words used, there is no telling when or what the solution will be.

anybody, who suggests others to mess up their credit history, needs to be hammered. Such an absurd idea need to be hammered as well.
I am not sure how you can mess up your credit history by typing in an absurd SSN like 999-99-9999 which is what bad credit fakers seem to have done so far. Your real credit history is going to be unharmed associated with the legit SSN anyways right?

Anyone do this and can share with me what point in the process do they validate the SS#? I thought it was right after I entered it, but I am think maybe it isn't because it then validates my address finds its and then asked me to accept itunes / apple EULA and then accept AT&t contract. I don't wan to do that if I don't have to, afraid they will give me a 59.99 plan by accident. Thanks.

I think that's probably the case. That's how all other pre-paid phones work. You don't have to "fail" the credit check.
Well, other pre-paid phones don't get advertised as "2 year contract needed" too.

Att told me that Apple Might Shut down my Go Phone Service

I had called up today to see if AT&T could add Visual Voicemail to my account instead of Basic Voicemail. However, In reply after waiting 10 minutes they told me that Apple has Started terminating users who are on an iphone off the GoPhone PLan. I replied saying that as part of the DMCA i'm entitled to any network i choose. From my perspective isn't it illegal for apple to kick users off go Phone for the phone that people or using , or for the fact that they're not using the right plan ?

I Need Instructions On Credit Fail!
